I'm thinking about buying another shotgun, right now I have a Mossberg 590 Mariner (2 3/4" = 9 shots  3" = 8 shots). What I'm thinking about is buying a "slug-gun."

What I'm looking for is almost a tactical look, not a hunting look, and is mainly going to be shot at the range at the 50 yrd rifle range in CR. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm thinking about another 12GA 590 Special Purpose, this time the black with the Ghost Ring sights, but don't know much about chokes and such with shotguns. Would this be a suitable "slug-gun" for fun? I'm not into hunting, and just want a shotgun to bring to the range and have fun with and destroy my shoulder .

please don't bash me, shotguns are new to me, only have one, the Mossberg 590 mariner that i use for shark fishing and skeet shooting when bored.

If their are other brands out there that you are a fan of add them here so I can look at them.

Want to try something different other than my rifles

Thanks!!

The Special Purpose has a Cylinder bore (wide open, no restriction) so you can definitely fire slugs out of it.

Remington 870 Police Pump with an 18" Improved Cylinder Choke, bead sight, parkerized finish and a Hogue Rubber overlayed FG Stock. Set up to shoot 2 3/4 Rifled Slug and 00 Buckshot alternately. I have not looked at another shotty since buying this 3 years ago. It's my first and probably my last. It is also my primary home defense weapon. This baby is an excellent slug gun

It looks like this , but with a 2 shot extension tube and a 6 shot holder on the receiver.

I cannot recall exactly, around $380-400 new in box. Then add in another $200. for the stock, extension tube and shotshell caddie. My reasons for the 870 P was not about cost, but with the beefed up components it receives. If you find a used one, grab it.

I called my dealer and found a few deals, but have a "legality" question reguarding it. Is it ok for a Bayo lug to be on a pump shotgun? I read the statue and can't find anything on pump shotguns regarding bayo-lugs, just semi-auto shotguns.

Just want to make sure I didn't miss something

Being a pump action takes it out of the Assault Weapon/Evil Features issue.
As long as the barrel is 18" or longer and the overall length (at its shortest) is at least 26", you're good with collapsible/folding stock, bayonet lug, flash hider (if there is such a thing for a shotgun) and threaded barrel.

+1 on the Mossy 590 Special Purpose.  I just got one and in fact, just got back from the range shooting it for the first time!

It has a 20" barrel, bead sights.  8+1 capacity, the ability to fire 3" magnum rounds, a bayo lug, and a heat shield that makes it look like a mean mofo.  Mine also came with a speedfeed stock which will hold 4 more rounds for your shooting pleasure.

I shot buckshot and slugs today.  I got federal rifled slugs.  Since the barrel is smooth, rifled slugs turn themselves within the barrel to stabilze the slug in flight and get good accuracy.  I tried shooting 100 yards today and was quite impressed.  The bead sight doesn't really do too much at that range, but with ghost rings, I'm sure you could be deadly as all hell with it.

Trust me, you'll like this gun.  You should be able to find one for about $400 new.

Edited to add picture.

Im in the market for a 12 gauge right now as well and im stuck between the 870 and the 590. A friend of mine has an 870 Tactical which I've used at the range several times and performs great. It's mainly going to be used for home defense and blasting the occasional clay pigeon, I'm just having a hard time deciding. I wish I could afford to just buy both :P

Just got a few slugs to try out in my Mossberg I have now with the bead sights, going to try 3"  1oz Rifled Slug, and 2 3/4" 1oz rifled slugs.

I just got quoted $381.60 after transfer, taxes, and shipping to my dealer, going to be 2-3 weeks since hes moving shop. Here is what I'm getting:

Here is my current one that I have (got it for a STEAL at Sports Authority when they still sold guns, got it for $135 used!!!), got it a while back. Its about 5 - 6 yrs old now. The bottom pic is from today on my cell phone, and no I don't sleep with it under my pillow.

Anyone know a good site that sells add-ons cheaply, such as stocks, grips, etc?

After I get my stuff I will post the pics, got a Dragunov, Savage 10fp .308 Choate Stock, and this comming in. Saving some money and putting it all on 1 form, also raises less flags since they only need one backround check

Little short on cash right now, since I'm juggeling 3 hobbies at once: Shooting, Salt Water Fish Tanks, and Garden Ponds hehe. Once I get the funds up thats 1 thing I need to check off my list, a Benelli. Still got like 50-60 guns on my list im looking for.  Can't decide if I should continue the modern firearms and get them before they are banned if they are going to be, or to go back to my WWII collection and get a SVT-40. At the rate this state is going Im going to stay modern and get as many as I can

The only problem (other then price) with a Benelli M4 is you still have to contend with the NY AWB.

(b) a semiautomatic shotgun that has at least two of the following characteristics:

(i) a folding or telescoping stock;
(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
(iii) a fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds;
(iv) an ability to accept a detachable magazine; or

The Benelli M4 comes with a fixed pistol grip stock, and a 4 round magazine. You can buy a plus 2 extension and pin a block in the extension so the M4 will only have a 5 plus 1 capacity. The LEO only Benelli M4 would be a problem with the folding stock, pistol grip, and 6 plus 1 capacity though. I have the non leo Benelli M4 with the plus 2 extension for now. When I retire I'll just put some kind of block in the extension to limit the "fixed magazine" to 5 rounds . You've got to love the loopholes.

Is this the current law, or is this the law that the libs are trying to get passed in Albany?  I want to get a tac shotgun, and was leaning toward the 11-87P, but I'm concerned with the 5 round restriction.  It might have to be the 870.

45stops-em-quick this is the current NY AWB that was enacted in 2000 thanks to Mario Pataki.

6 plus 1 is ok for a 1187 Police if you don't have a pistol grip stock . I had a 1187P before my Benelli M4 and I didn't like it. To many moving parts and a pain to clean. I'd just get a nice NIB 870 Police for around $500.00 and save the $200.00 extra that the 1187P would cost you.

couldn't get any heavier too.  I had that adn whiel it looks mean, it's a heavy motherfooker.  Hard to shoulder or keep at ready without a good three point siling.  They realyl popped alot of metal ont here to make the adator piece fit the lines, and it looks gREAT, but they pay for that in weight.

Having said that, the sights are insanely good on this shotgun.  I (and I see lots of others) replaced them with mepro night sights, popped on a surefire foreend , an eotech and a socom stock,.... that was one HEAVY 1300$ shotgun!

sold the whole rig a while ago.  too heavy.  I eman REAL heavy.

The thing was a freaking crew served weapon.

I considered going with a VFG to help, but it wouldn't have helped, the platform as a whole is too heavy.

I now have the exact opposite, a mossberg 500E pistol grip only 410.

but there's also an 870P coming to my FFL this week, so I have some real firepower if I need it.  Gonna go with a mesa low tube adaptor, CTR, TD grip, railed handguard and VFG.

With all taht, it'll be half the weight of the FN.

FN was a FINE shooter, no doubt, but a pig of a gun!
