I have never been to a range with a rifle before I have only done trap shooting up until the last couple years.  For the past couple years I have been building a preban AR15 off of a PWA lower receiver.  Serial number is well below the cutoff but all I have as "proof" that is was assembled before the date was a signature from my previous owner saying it was, it is not notorized and there is no paperwork since the company is closed obviously.
So if I bring it to the range will I be hassled at all right away and should I fear bringing this out at all since I don't have ironclad proof that it is a solid preban?
Any thoughts at all on this, a little nervous right now for my first time out in a couple months.

I wouldn't worry about it it all. Take the rifle out and shoot it, the amount of conversation between you and anyone asking about your rifle is up to you. If anyone makes a statement about your rifle and you feel compelled to answer, a simple answer of "it's a pre-ban."  Should suffice. If they make other issuse, just tell 'em you belt-fed is in the shop and you were stuck using this poodle shooter.

It's usually just the loudmouth, know it all camo wearers that come over and freak out about a bayo-lug.  Since I try my best to avoid them anyway, it's usually not an issue.

I don't know why you guys worry about such things. If it's truly a pre-ban just tell the offending creatin to go piss up a rope if he pushes you for proof!

In my experience no one really cares about the legality of what you are shooting except the law, even at that if you tell them its pre-ban most of the time they wont give you trouble.  Sometimes you might run into a LEO who actually does care, just bring a receipt of some other sort of proof with you when you go and no one should give you any problems.

I see gen-u-ine "illegal assault weapons" at the range all the time. I don't care... and generally never mention it, becuase... I don't care.  But I've started to mention it to folks, more as an "oh by the way...."  public service. Simply because I keep running into guys who have just bought brand new non compliant guns from local stores, and have no idea they have a potential problem.  I blame the stores, not the buyers.

I can't see you having a problem at the range.

Starting to boost my confidence.  I was just worried about running into that off duty LEO at the range or something and giving me a hard time.  But it is starting to look like I won't have too much of a problem.  Thank you very much everyone, I look forward to enjoying the fun.... now if I can just afford some ammo... but that is a different story!

dont worry

ive seen enough illegal config shit even at shows, LEO's wont hassle you for a few reasons...firstly most dont know the AWB rules/laws, secondly, they could give two shits unless they WANT to tag you on SOME sort of charge.

I have a couple of PWA's and never had trouble or asked if my rifles are prebans...I have been asked about Magazine capacity which surprised me at Mitchel field not to long ago

I would not assume there are no LEO's in NYS that would not question someone who is in possession of +10 mags or what looks like an illegal AW at a range. As we have also seen it is possible for a range officer at a public range to call the local PD if they believe you are in possession of an illegal weapon. YMMV

If I didn't know the loathsome SOB's they bought them from, I might agree with you.

I shoot my Oly Arms early AR carbine at a police range.  One of the cops came over one day and said "Gee, that barrel looks kind of short".  I told him it was legal and he said "OK" and walked away.  I think that would be your "average" response.

thats too bad you have the gestapo down where you are

if LEOs are looking that hard to violations, then thats pretty bad, and sad.  If its obvious thats one thing, but...asking to check dates on stuff, and calling the cops just to check things out, thats ridiculous, and downright Nazi-like.
