I recently received my FFL and NJ permit earlier this year.  My local PD was great and the entire process only took 2 months.  I now have been bitten by the bug and want another handgun.  Do I have to go through the entire process again of having two friends and my spouse fill out recommendation and consent forms?  I had a hard time convincing my wife the first time that I needed a handgun.  Now she will really think I am nuts.  Actually, my fear is that she will hit the mall and spend a small fortune since I am "wasting" my money and silly toys.

Yep

You have got to do it all again!  But you can get multiple permits (up to 10) for $2.00 each.
Too bad they expire in 90 days.  It keeps me from doing the impulse buys.

Actually, you fill out an application with the same information you filled out, but don't need to do another copy of the mental health form, and don't need to be fingerprinted again according to the state regulations, but I've heard some localities are confused and ask for fingerprints again (as if they'd changed from the ones they have on file...).

Your reference person information is on the new application, but I've never heard of them being questioned again - you're already in the state computer with a SBI number, and any offense you may have committed would have become clearly linked to your SBI and they'd have already come to take away your guns.

just remember, pistol permits are only good for 90 days, but if you go back within the first 90 they can be extended for another 90 days, but only once and only while still valid in the original 90.

While we're on the subject, how long is it taking you guys to get pistol permits theses days? I'm getting bullshitted (again) from my town PD. My app for 2 went in on April 27. Still not a peep....

I called the NJSP today to see what their take on it was and they passed the buck to the AG and told me to call them.

I specifically asked why is it that some people are able to get permits within two weeks in the state of NJ, while mine take four months. The answer "I can't comment on that". I said, how about the folks in south jersey who walk into the PD and ask the chief for a permit and they are issued on the spot? Again, "I can't comment on that".

"So you are aware of the discrepency?"
"You need to call the AG and file a complaint that will be addressed with 70 days"
"Thanks for nothing."

CLICK.

There is so much buck passing, non-accountability, and general laziness, it makes me crazy.

You didn't think our tax money really went for taking responsibility, full accountability and diligent hard work by our Publik Officials here in the People's Republik of New Jersey, did you???  Dream on.  Oh, and don't let go of your ankles either.

Not to be picky, but they are called "Firearms Purchaser Identification Card" and "Permit to Purchase a Handgun and Form of Register"  I like to say "FID" and "P2P".
This should be a one page questionaire.  Don't list your wife as a reference.

There is no limit on the amount you can get.  But you'd better use them all up or you surely will be limited in the future.

You are supposed to per the NJSP guidelines.
Correct.  If you are told otherwise, refuse and call the NJSP Firearms Unit right in front of them.

2 months is the norm.

I just looked at the NJSP Firearms FAQ, and they say that fingerprinting is required when applying for a pistol purchase permit. They dont specify if its needed every time or not however.

http://www.njsp.org/faq.html#firearms

>Q5.
>
>When is fingerprinting required?
>
>A5.
>
>Individuals must be fingerprinted when applying for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card or a Permit to Purchase a >Handgun. Individuals with a Permit to Carry a Handgun must be fingerprinted upon the initial application and each renewal.
>
>Fees - $54.00 certified check or money order made out to the Division of State Police S.B.I. Additional information can be >obtained from your local police department or nearest New Jersey State Police station.
>
>Police departments with questions concerning fingerprints or fees please contact the State Section of Identification at ext. >2918.

I also found this. Does the part about the discretion of the Chief of Police or Superintendant mean that you have to provide proof of who you are to their liking, or that they can ask for new prints at their discretion?

(g) An applicant for a handgun purchase permit who possesses a valid firearms purchaser identification card, or who has previously obtained a handgun purchase permit from the same licensing authority for which he or she was previously fingerprinted, and who provides other reasonable satisfactory proof of his or her identity, in the discretion of the chief of police or Superintendent, need not be fingerprinted again.  In such case, the chief of police or superintendent shall otherwise fully investigate the application in accordance with this subchapter.
