I am moving to ewing township in three months and want to bring my ar-15 with me but after a brief conversation with the Ewing PD i feel like its going to be a complete pain in the ass.

I have a 16" barreled bushmaster with a permanent brake attached and a fixed stock.  I was under the impresssion that as long as the barrel was 16" with a perm brake and fixed stock that the rifle was ok.   But, after talking with the PD I realized that they have absolutely no clue, he actually told me to turn the weapon in before I move, thinking I was talking about a pre-ban.

Any info on a weapons transfer appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

It must be in post ban config and can not have "AR15" marked on it. XM15 is legal and Colt MT is OK but not "AR15."

Welcome to the stupid laws of New Germany Jersey.

If it is a post ban configuration and does not say “AR15” on it you are OK.
I would just bring it and once you arrive apply for your NJ FID (firearms identification) card. Don’t go shooting until you have the FID card.
You can’t have any magazines over 15 rounds either.

Yup, as the previous posters said in regards to your AR-15.  Not much you can do about the stupid laws here but grin and bear it, unfortunately.

Who did you talk to at Ewing, if I may ask?.

I dont think it says ar-15 anywhere on the rifle, i'll have to take a look at it when I get home. This rifle was in pre-ban config. but I have modified it unfortunately to meet NJ's strict gun laws.  I guess I will have to sell my 30rd magazines.hinking.gif

Thanks for the info guys..

No idea it was the general information line.

Sell the 30 rd mags and pick up 15rd NJ legal mags from PK90.  As for bringing in your now NJ legal Bushy, you would probably get better info on what you have to do to by calling the NJ State Police instead of the locals.

AFAIK, nothing *TO* do. Just move in with your NJ legal bushy and welcome to the Peoples Republik of New Jersey, where the nation's highest population density means that the other guy always has his hand in *your* pocket. Visit your local PD and fill out the paperwork (1 form) for a NJ Firearms Owner ID Card. Fingerprints, background check, the usual BS. Wait your not unusual 1 to 6 months. Once you get it, you can buy more long arms (And in some places, like the Trenton area, you will need it just to purchase rifle ammo. Yeah, I know that sucks). Same form, same BS, more $$  for each Pistol Purchase Permit you want. Carry permit? - fuggetaboutit! This is Joisey - land of lousy liberal legislators!

Your chances of getting accurate information related to firearms by calling a PD are slim and none. The NJ firearms laws related to assault weapons are here:

Alright, Im feeling better now after reading the reponses.  I cant believe how strict the state of NJ is,  the state of DE pretty much allows anything, no permits to buy hand guns, easy to obtain a ccw permit.  Looks like im moving into the worst gun state possible...

On a side not any good places to shoot in the Ewing/Trenton area?  Fort Dix?

Thanks, M

Between taxes (income, sales, property, school), utility rates, insurance rates, cost of housing and anti-gun laws you have to be nutz to move to either NY or NJ. Oh BTW it's  going to get even worse in the coming years.  Most of us are planning our escapes. Even our esteemed NJ ARFCOM mod moved to PA.

The closest two places to shoot at would be either the Citizen's Rifle and Revolver club in West Windsor/Heightstown, or Ready, Aim, Fire in Bristol PA.  Each are about 20 minutes away, counting traffic.  Fort Dix is nice, but will take you 40-45 minutes to get there.  Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol club is in Jackson, and it's about the same distance away as Fort Dix.

I was going to join CRRC, but I decided not to.  YMMV, but I just don't think it's for me.  It has its good points since it is a private range and you can shoot your handguns indoors 24-hours a day, but I don't like some of their stringent rules, and their rifle shooting facilities leave a bit to be desired for me.

Ready, Aim, Fire isn't perfect, but it's enough for me right now.

Ewing really isn't that bad for permits, luckily.  However, I'm sorry that you're moving into Ewing right now.  I'm sure you'll read about it in the local paper ...

IM incoming again .

Edit:  I don't mean to make it sound like Ewing is a bad place, because it's not, but politically it's an unhappy place right now.

Question:

Do you actually need a FID card to move in with existing firearms?  I know you need your FID to purchase a long gun and most places you need it to buy ammo.  Dicks Sporting goods in Morris County asks for an FID or a license for ammo.

If you're just going to be here for a few months and you don't plan on buying any firearms you may not need it.

Yup, that's accurate.

New Jersey is like being in The Matrix, except all the tubes are connected to your wallet.

Ewing is near Philadelphia, PA.  Literally you'll be a spitting distance away from relative freedom in the Keystone State.  Why not move to PA and commute? You can have all the goodies NJ would deny you!

Actually you wouldnt.  Even as an LEO calling NJSP to try and clear something up about the AWB i was given bogus information by someone in the firearms unit.  I ended up checking with one of the local FFL's who was able to clear up what i needed to know and even give be the statute sub-section i couldnt find.
