I know that I need a riffled barrel to shoot rifled slugs. But Can I shoot rifled slugs out of a non rifled barrel?.Or 00 buck out of a rifled barrel for that matter? ...Thanks for your time....Bee |
| You can shoot rifled slugs out of a smoothbore shotty. Like Winchester Super X rifled slugs. Extra padding should be a must. I'm getting conflicting reports whether to use a choke or not. I was told I don't need a choke for slugs but others say you need one for tight groupings. |

If you are shooting slugs or 00 buck I would go with a Knoxx Spec Ops stock. They are amazing at cutting down the recoil. Well worth the $$. I know you can shoot buck shot out of any choke. The tighter the choke the tighter the pattern. Slugs whole different game. I would post your questions in the shotgun section of the Armory. |

You'll get best results with a MODIFIED choke in your shotgun with slugs. They're called RIFLED slugs for a reason, they have small lands of lead molded right into the slug itself. Rifled slugs are also known as foster slugs. And you CAN shoot slugs out of any choke from FULL CHOKE to CYL BORE. DO NOT shoot slugs out of any choke tigher than full however, these being super full or handicap trap. Most shotgun companies have screw in chokes available in thier barrel selection. There are special rifled chokes for those who want to fire SABOT slugs out of their regular barrel. You DO NOT need a fully rifled barrel to shoot Sabots out of, however they do help. I work for REMINGTON and have shot many slugs , both of the rifled type and sabot and have never used added padding with 2 3/4 or 3 inch magnum shells, now 3 1/2 inch shells give you a good thump. I PREFER 2 3/4 inch FEDERAL CLASSIC slugs in my hunting guns. 3 inch shells do kick a bit more, and follow-up shots are harder to put on target because of the recoil. |
