You never said what you got? Just want to see how suicidal you really are Back in the 80's, I crashed a bike, wrecked the front end hurt my ankle. So I went home and then to the hospital, to many people and I wasn't in the mood to wait (early evening). So I went back home and put some ice on it. Fell into a nap (no danger of head injury, it wasn't that fast and I had a full helmet on) and when I woke up my ankle hurt like hell so it being like 2am I went back to the ER expecting to find less people which I did. Doc looks at it, (some what swollen) and says lets get an x-ray to be sure (which is what I wanted in the first place). So I end up waiting TWO more hours. Why you ask? There was a couple brought in, in very bad shape, that the one x-ray Tech on duty was trying to get shots of. What happened to them?, Motorcycle accident. No Helmets. So after I get the x-rays, an ace wrap from the nurse I get the "donor cycle" speech. I look at her and tell her if I was some rich yuppie asshole who hurt his ankle skiing, (which I also did at that time back in the 80's) would I be getting the same speech? She pauses, thinks and then tells me about how those other two will be lucky to ever walk and chew gum again because they didn't ware (sp) helmets. Looking at LONG term theropy to make any sort of recovery, if they LIVED, and did I ware a helmet? Yes, always. End of conversation. Walk out and the sun is up. 6:30am. A week to ten days later I go see the Bone Dr. for a consult and he tells me to thank my mom. What? Why? Because he says he can see by my dense bones in the x-rays that obviously she made me drink my milk. or all it takes as a mom!) Spent the next six weeks repairing the bike [Honda 700 Interceptor] that summer. It was stollen Chistmas Eve as I was at a Christmas party, and I had to leave that morning, (Christmas Day) for a ski trip, Mt. Snow, Vt. Never got hurt skiiing though. L.jr. |

I got an '86 Yamaha Radian (600) for $650.00. I am in restore mode now. It is in pretty good shape just needs a lot of cleaning up. So far new clutch, petcock rebuild, and carb rebuild. Now that the carbs are rebuilt I am having a terrible time getting it started. Problem is I have no friends that ride and no friends that seem to know how to operate a wrench. This is my first bike so I am in no hurry to ride. Bike restore as a winter project. Then the MSF class in the Spring. If I feel uncomfortable or don't like it I should easily be able to double my money on the bike and buy another AR or something. Thanks, R |

Radian is a good bike, kind of funky in the styling department, but so is the V-max. Used bikes have often sat around without having the carbs cleaned and drained so the gas builds up into varnish like sediment, but you rebuilt the carbs and petcock so it seems like you should be okay in that area. Did you change the airfilter and look in the airbox (I assume this bike has one, should be right under the seat). I bought a Kawasaki once from a dealer that ran horribly until I found the squirrel's nest in the airbox, apparently he stored the bikes in a falling down barn behind the dealership Are you getting a good spark from the plugs? You can screw out a spark plug and then put it back in the sparkplug boot and hold it against the outside of the engine-crank it and see if you get a good spark. Gas,air spark, that's what ya need.Oh you probably know this, but the battery it came with might be shot, bike batteries suck and if you leave them in there without running it they crap out pretty quickly.. |

Thanks for the replies. Glad to see that I at least had the right ideas. The bike ran when I picked it up but it had been sitting for over a year. Got it home and it would start and idle with help. Changed plugs, air filter, oil and battery has a good charge. After idling for a while I went to clean some of the rust of off the headers and noticed that two of the four were cold. Checked the plugs and checked the spark, both were fine. Pulled the carbs and they looked like crap...full of rust and one with a broken float holder. Bought new carb set off of ebay and they look good but all gummed up. Stripped and soaked replaced aprts that looked bad. Reassembled and now it won't start. So now it is a winter project that I hope I can have ready by spring. R |
