Hi - could anyone tell me if getting a carry permit (I live in Suffolk) is possible? I do not have my own business, I don't carry a lot of cash - I just would like to get it. Your thoughts? Thanks. |

Welcome to the other side of the looking glass, ALice. I live in Westchester, but Suffolk should be a little less of a problem... First off, the fees are several hundred, you need character references, fingerprinting and a LONG waiting process while NYS processes everything.Any criminal record is a no-no. It's tedious, but it's worth getting one. LI Crew, can we give this fellow some more specific advice/details? PS Welcome to the NY Hometown Forum.

| In Suffolk with your situation you will be issued a "sportsman" permit which allows you to posses hanguns for target shooting and hunting and allows you to carry it concealed to and from the hunting grounds or range. That is exactly what I have and unless your situation changes that's all they will allow. If you belong to a 24 hour range I suppose you could always theoretically be on the way to or from the range if you know what I mean but the restriction on the permit does not allow full carry and do so at your own risk. |
| No judges here on Long Island, the police do the permits. There was a law passed a few years back by the Suffolk County legislator and signed by the County Executive that in essence made all pistol permits carry. It had to be implemented by the Police Commissioner and he refused to do that. Odd the PC is appointed by the Exec and works for him basically and yet refused to implement this new law? How's that? Seems the Exec wanted it both ways, sign the law, yet don't have his PC implement it. Let's see what happens now with the new Exec and PC. |

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have my pistol lisence forms all filled out and will probobly be dropping them off at Yaphank on Monday, but like you guys mentioned, it's only for sportman and hunting. That's great and all but since we "have the right to bear arms" I'm not quite sure why we can't bear arms any time we want. Your input was/is real helpul! Thanks. |

The application fee in Suffolk County is $10 plus a DCJS fee of $99. The license is good for 5 years. Because the permit is renewable you are not subject to NICS checks for the purchase of either long or handguns in NY. SC also has a “Pistol License Information Handbook” online: www.co.suffolk.ny.us/Police/Pistol_%20License_%20Handbook-020505.pdf They also have other forms online: www.co.suffolk.ny.us/webtemp3.cfm?dept=12&id=1752 |
