Has anyone else noticed these wild green parrots flying and nesting around the Dallas area?

We've got a flock that frequents the trees around my office in South Austin as well. I like seeing them. Nice distraction from the usual Grackles.

Yes, there are many colonies around the DFW area. They prefer nesting in the transformer station boxes owned by local utilities. They use sticks as nesting material which is a problematic combo for possible short circuiting of the equipment. As a result the nests are cleaned out from time to time.

There are thousands of them in the Dallas area. Like previously stated, they are much more attractive to look at then the your standard run of the mill black bird.

They nest in large communal nests like this:

They don't like sharing with other birds when it comes to bird feeders. You'll either see a flock of them eating or a flock of other birds eating...rarely a mix at one time.

Very cool. I have never seen anything like that. Looks like a bird cult.

Did these escape from someplace into the wild?

Escaped pets that took to the area. In Austin they have been around since the 70's. According to this article.
