I'm going to be in Austin for 2 weeks. Looking for a list of things to see and do. Already been to San Antonio to see stuff around there. Already plan on taking day trips out of Austin but need ideas of things to see. Dallas is on the plan to pay respects to DPD officers and JFK site.
Thanks |

Towns:
Fredericksburg Wimberley Dripping Springs Lockhart Georgetown Tons of Breweries/Wineries/Distilleries around... like Twisted X Thirsty Planet Jester King and lots more. Just drive down 290 West or 71 West, should be able to entertain yourself for at least a day on both. Other stuff: Hamilton Pool, Jacobs well & other natural springs. |
|
Bob Bullock Museum, maybe Barton Springs if you are in that age group, Camp Mabry Military Museum for sure.
I would not go to 6th street if you paid me. Last week there were two shootings and two stabbings at the same time in a three block area.
Texas Chili Parlor at 14th and Lavaca. |

Yeah... if you want to catch some good live music in Austin rather than fighting the craziness of 6th St. check out clubs that are outside downtown like Saxon Pub on S. Lamar. If you check the online sites that have show listings you should be able to find someplace that has music you'd like -- just about every genre can be found in Austin. Texas Chili Parlor at 14th and Lavaca. An interesting place to have a beer... there are just too many good places to eat in Austin to even get started... |

If you make it out to Dripping Springs, visit Mercer Street. The Barber Shop (draft beer bar) is a cool place to hang out, and Hudson's on Mercer (owned by a buddy of mine) is a great place to hear live music. Twisted X brewery is a mile or two from there, and Jester King/Stanley's Farmhouse Pizza are about 8.5 miles away. Texas State Cemetery is cool, especially if you're into war heroes. Chris Kyle's grave is there. Puts you in walking distance to the Capitol Building too. If you go to Hamilton Pool, call to make sure the pool is open. It's been closed quite a bit this year because of bacteria (according to the sign I pass on the way home everyday). If you want to shoot some shit... I know a guy. |

What about outside the area. 2-3 hour drive okay. Historical stuff landmarks interesting stuff on the cheap? Enchanted Rock Pedernales Falls The National Museum of the Pacific War in Frederickburg is top notch. The Bush library in College Station is interesting. |

Spicewood Vineyards and the Arc de Texas
Deep Eddy Vodka and Gruene Hall For Haunted Locations around Austin, there is the Driskill Hotel and there is a haunted pizza restaurant in Oak Hill called the Austin Pizza Garden. The Austin Pizza Garden is actively haunted as I saw such activity there when I ate there over the July 4th weekend... |

Camp Mabry has a great museum on post. Open to the public. http://texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org/ Went there in June and in addition to a great static display of armor outside, have a nice museum inside chronicling Texas military history. Unlike the Bullock museum, the museum at Camp Mabry has many rooms and exhibits dedicated to Texas military units involved in the Civil War. Probably the best Civil War exhibit focused on Texas military I have seen. The Bullock museum focuses on politics, the Mabry focuses on soldiers.

If you're a history fan (like me), schedule at 2 days there; a full day isn't enough time to see the full museum. They also have re-enactments with tanks and explosions, so check the schedule before you go. It's about a 90 minute drive, depending where in Austin you start. |

McBrides (on Lamar) is pricey (IMO) but it's been there since biblical times, so it's something of an institution. Can be rather fuddy. |

Prepare for rush hour traffic and road construction both in Austin and DFW. The places in DFW takes you through the horseshoe which is constantly changing so your GPS may be wrong. I would recommend Ellen's, YO Steakhouse, or The Palm if you want to eat nearby the JUL museaum. The Dallas Aquarium is not worth the price. While in Austin I would recommend: The Hula Hut, Black's BBQ and Parkside to eat. |
