Hello all,
This is my first post but long time lurker. I live in Dallas and have been very interested in joining the Texas State Guard. I have looked all over the internet and tried to soak up all the info I can. Problem is most of the threads I have found of people discussing it at any length are all from 2009-2011. Nobody seems to speak much of it presently. By far the most engaging threads were here on ARFCOM. So, I thought I would bring it back and see if anyone on the boards is still active. How is the state of the guard currently? Has it grown, expanded mission, etc? And what are your current thoughts on everything. My next step is finding a recruiter to speak too for the 4th or 19th regiment as well as TMAR in the DFW area. Any contacts would be appreciated! Please understand this thread is not for anyone interested in debating the merits of one branch vs the other, or why YOU think the gaurd sucks or any of that. Only for people to discuss current guard goings on and for new people interested in gaining more intel. Ive seen the TSG threads in the past spiral out of control with bickering and do not wish that for this one. Thanks! |

I was with the 2nd in Austin at Camp Mabry for several years.
As a First Sergeant I worked with every level from raw Recruits to Colonels. Met some danged good people who was still great friends many years later after we all went onto other things. My general impression is that things have improved and the State Guard is now more integrated into the Plans for Texas Military Forces. All in all, it was a very good experience in the Guard. | Good to hear about the improved cohesiveness in the TMF. Has the mission statement expanded much beyond shelter ops? I spent a couple months on the ground just days after IKE doing clean up and assessment. No power, running water, NG curfews after dark. Galveston was a wild place for a while, but I loved it. I would really love to be "back in the thick of it" persay, possibly even put my security background back to use. WADA, SAR, SWR. |

Due to my work keeping me away from home so much, I resigned my warrant last fall. I just couldn't find the time to devote to it. I was involved in communications for TXSG, TXMF, TXSOC, and US Army 9th Signal Corps. The mess after Ike got me deployed to Galveston also. Ivan was another deployment. I also handled traffic during and immediately after Katrina between stations in the affected areas and JDOM at the Pentagon. For TXSG we handled immediate need communications into and out of the affected area between the forward deployed relief contingents and the State Ops Center, FEMA and 9th Signal, until adjunct cellular trucks arrived and satellite internet was implemented. I miss it immensely. People misunderstand the viability of TXSG and want to believe their mission is limited to 'shelter monitors'. |

I've always made it a point to Thank the TSG members for their efforts every time I see them.
See them every year at Ellington Field at "Wings Over Houston", and remember pulling a lot of traffic & security duty for events way back many years ago in Austin in my days in the TSG. Good Group and "Thank You" to all of you for all you do! BIGGER_HAMMER
