I have a small business and we have about ten vehicles in total. Some don't get used often except on special projects. We had one that we have not driven since March and the tags expired in April. We didn't renew them because it has just been sitting and no sense on paying registration fees on vehicles not being used.

We needed it for a job this week so today I took it to get inspected and renew the registration. Because of their new no inspection sticker program and the fact you can't register it without an inspection program I had to get it inspected first.

So I go get it inspected and drive straight from there to the registration office. They ask if I have received any tickets for driving it with no registration and I tell them no that it has been sitting since March and she asks if I have driven it any since then and I reply just today to get the inspection because I can't register it without the inspection right? and she says thats correct.

I pay for it and notice the new sticker she gives me expires in April. I ask here whats the deal with this? She replies since you have been driving it around the renewal will expire on the same month it expired. I tell her I told you I haven't been driving it around it has been parked for 6 months I just drove it today to get the inspection. She says it doesn't matter you drove it so it expires in April.  I ask her what am I supposed to do then since I have to get it inspected before I can register? and she replies you could put it on a trailer and take it to the inspection place.

What a load of crap. Next time I will just keep my mouth shut and say no I haven't been driving it. So much for being honest.

Most of us agree that it's really a stupid change that wasn't needed with inspection system.

If your registration was expired for three years, you would have had to pay for three years of registration fee's.

Yep, mine was a 4 month boink. This was before the inspection sticker change. I thought they should  have given me a current month registration sticker at the time as  well.

I had one sit in my garage for a little over 10 years...  They gave me a current month registration when i got it going again.  However, this was last November, right before all the changes to the system.

Do you really have to answer a question that incriminates yourself? Couldn't you take the 5th and refuse to answer any questions that deal with self incrimination?

IANAL

Like my reply above.  I would answer, it has been a project vehicle I have been slowly working on. Once I got it running in the driveway, I trailered it to the inspection station and trailered it back home and now here I am to get it registered.

Just don't be the guy who is not prepared and causes an additional 10 minutes for your turn in line.

I just renewed the registration on my truck a few months late, online.  There weren't any questions about use,  just if I had received any citations for it having an expired registration (no). I had got the inspection done prior to it expiring, though. New registration sticker shall have the original date.

Amen to doing Government business online!  After the hassle of dealing with the USPS on a passport renewal recently I never want to step into that place again, I hope EVERYTHING can be completed online before 10 years is up.

Yup. I renew everything I can online. The only problem I've had is when renewing my farm tags for my pickup and trailer. Everything else was EASY.

Wish they would allow trailer tags to be done online.
