| Spring Guns and Ammo had a S&W demo day today and one of the guns I shot was the S&W Model 500 in S&W .500 Magnum. It actually hurt my hands to shoot this thing. |

That's kind of strange. I have let lots of folks shoot that exact combination out of mine and none have ever said their hand actually hurt... Bottom three are 500's http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mongocaver/Big_Bore_Revolvers_zps2e4c07b7.jpg 3 rounds on the right are S&W 500 500 grain, 600 grain, and 700 grain http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mongocaver/100_0306_zps5d05ba7e.jpg Sorry, I am wrong. It was the red tipped load near the center. |

It was the red tipped load near the center. That one in the picture is actually a Hornady 200 grain Flex Tip for a S&W 460, but the same round in S&W 500 is 300 grain. It should really have some velocity out of a 500. It shows 2050 Fps measured at the muzzle, compared to 1425 Fps for the 500 grain. Edited to add that 300 grain looks to be the fastest factory round out of a 500. I need to get some to try, even though they are still slower than the 200 grain out of a 460... |

No matter what, a S&W 500 is a handful. The longer barrels mean that you have a whole lot of steel to hold up, but the shorter the barrel, the more recoil too. I wouldn't let anyone that hadn't shot a pistol before shoot one of my larger calibers until they have some pistol experience. Even experienced pistol shooters I start with 45 Colt, go to 44 Magnum, then to 454 Casull, on to 460 S&W, and finally on to the 500. The Colt, Casull and 460 S&W can all be shot out of the 460, so that saves on number of guns to clean. Also concerning the double tap, when someone is starting out shooting a powerful handgun, you always just put one round in at a time...No matter what caliber and kind of gun it is... |

November 7, 2013 A South American woman has died in an apparent accidental shooting at a northeast Missouri gun range. The Ralls County Sheriff’s Department says the shooting happened Sunday at the Salt River Gun Range near New London. Authorities say 25-year-old Andrea Jinneth Corredor-Rivera of Colombia died at the scene. Corredor-Rivera died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Ralls County Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie tells WGEM-TV that the woman was shooting a .500-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun when the strength of the gun’s recoil caused her to lose control. She was visiting family in the area. The sheriff said the gun spun around in her hand, leading to a second fatal shot. No charges are expected in the case. |

Those videos were hard to believe. I witnessed one at an indoor range where the lady shooting put the second round directly thorough the shooting bench in front of her. I was alerted to something wrong as the pieces of plywood from the deck fell on me and my shooting position in the booth adjacent to her. It left a very nice hole in very thick plywood. Fortunately, no other damage to people or property. |
