Hey yall, I am a Tennessean looking to move to Tyler TX.
Can I get some opinions and input on the area? Shooting? Hunting? Out door activities? Things to do? Cost of living? Housing/rentals? Gyms? Diesel Shops?(by this I mean, a mechanic shop that does good reputable work on diesels as I have a diesel car and 2 cummins trucks.) It would be a permanent move for my wife and I. We are young and will both be working and living in the area. Thanks |

I'm just south of Tyler. About 3 miles from the city limits.
There is a shooting range out on Hwy 31. It's not too bad. Memberships can be bought at Noonday Gun Trader (good bit of guns). I don't hunt in Smith Co, but in sure you may be able to find some leases around Bullard, Jacksonville, Lindale etc. Not sure what kind of outdoor activities your interested in. Also not sure what stuff you like to do. There is Caldwell Zoo near MLK Blvd. Cost of living is pretty cheap. I would recommend buying a house (outside city limits is better...not city tax). I'm currently renting a house...buying is better as long as you plan to stay for awhile. Lots and lots and lots of gyms Diesel shops? Every gas station has diesel and every dealership that has trucks has diesels is that's what your asking... Gander Mountain recently upgraded their gun department. It has a pretty big selection, as does Porters pawn shop at Lake Palestine. Academy is pretty much next door to Gander Mountain. There is a huge outside mall being built next to Gander, between Gander and Toll 49 on Hwy 69. Brookshires grocery stores have a once a month ad where a lot of things are buy one get another for $0.01. |

I live 100 miles from Tyler and have never lived there, so I can't really speak with any authority. I do visit there for shopping and medical care at least 3 or 4 times a year, sometimes more. That being said, if for some reason I HAD to move from where I live now I would go straight to Tyler or possibly Longview with zero hesitation.
Both cities are big enough to have everything you need without the real big city hassle of Dallas or Houston. PS: I think Longview's (<30 mi) gun club has over 2000 members and very nice range faclilties. Good luck with the move! |

I live I'm Longview. The shooting club here is pretty nice, there are others around. Dan mentioned the one on 31. There is plenty of hunting and fishing around here. Your also not to far from the LA border. Cost of living is reasonable. I just moved from Austin and thought it would be cheaper, it's not really.

The little towns that are big into the oil and gas are very expensive. Old houses sell expensive. I'm from Carthage, and the housing is high there. Longview seems cheaper (than Carthage), but slightly higer than the Tyler area. Me and my wife are hoping to move back towards Carthage....maybe move to longview to be closer to home as soon as she find a job in Longview |

My daughter just moved to Tyler for a new job. I need a local oil change place that can be trusted not to take advantage of a young woman and the location of a Discount Tires shop. A trusted local mechanic would be helpful also. Dad is two hours away Time It Lube on South Broadway (2417 S Broadway Ave) have been really great. The manager actually supervises everything done and goes over with you everything done in detail. They are on the higher end of the price spectrum, though (around $100 to service my Titan as of late 2013)
The manager hands out weekly devotionals for you Christian folks. Bill Day Tire has been great for me for tire service (1800 S Broadway Ave). They are just north of Time It Lube I stated earlier. Not sure about a mechanic. Haven't needed one. For a good place to eat, Razoos is pretty good. It can be hectic sometimes though. Its pretty popular. One of the managers there is fantastic. The few times I have been there while it was busy, I have had a couple orders go wrong and he pretty much took care of it before I raised a hand....Top notch CS |

The whole town and it's road system is a total cluster and I dread it. Plan on at least 30 minutes at slow times and can be upwards of 45 minutes or more to get across town during rush hours. |

I learned the roads so I can avoid the rush time traffic. I still think Houston is worse |

I'm in Longview, but work with people from Tyler and am very familiar with the whole area.
There are 2 cities of Tyler. The good side and the bad side. I will say that my experiences in other cities and areas has led me to believe that while there are some rough parts of Tyler and even Longview, as long as you have your head on straight and don't go looking for trouble, you will be just fine. With that said, get your CHL and carry. Someday we will have to have a East Texas crew get together. There's a lot more members in this area than one would think. |
|
Have some relatives (former Minnesotans) who retired in Bullard, about 12 miles south of Tyler.
They absolutely love the area, and for good reason - It strikes the perfect balance between city and urban life, in a southern setting. As previously mentioned, Tyler traffic can be bad. That's probably the city's biggest downside - which says a lot. |
|
Which hospital are you coming to? PM if you prefer not to say publicly.
Traffic in Tyler is not bad. The problem, is that Tyler gas a large catchment area, and as a result the population doubles during rush hour, with all the folks going back to Bullard, Whitehouse, Flint, Chandler, Athens, Henderson etc. |

I kinda miss Tyler, lived in Flint for 10 years and just recently moved to Leander. The range out on 31 inst to bad as long as you can get out there during the week, it gets kinda crowed on the weekends. I spent a lot of time back on their 500 yard range. The longview range is much nicer but is an hour or so away, they do have several clubs and IDPA shoots etc that the 31 range doesn't.
About the only thing i miss about that place are the trees, and being so close to my families ranch

Your bullets will hit the overhang from the trees. Hey OP, If you move to Tyler, AR15.COM will only be about 30-40 minutes away |

Bump Coming to Tyler next week. I will be checking the town out and looking for places to stay- rentals. Thanks You could probably find cheaper rent houses outside if city limits. $1300 a month for us in a 1400 sq ft house built in 2006. I would like to buy a house, but my wife is unsure if she wants to find a new job or not. When we were looking, a 1950s house about the same size of ours was close to $2000 a month in the city limits. |

A trusted local mechanic would be helpful also. Dad is two hours away Observed that I had picked up a screw in a tire the other day. Went to a Discount Tire location different from the one I purchased my BF Goodrich tires at. Pulled up right as they were locking up, but they still took care of me! Their customer service cannot be overrated!! |

Grew up in the Tyler area. Started school in Whitehouse and graduated from Bullard in 1989. My mom still lives in Whitehouse so go back there pretty regularly. My mom worked for 20 years at the health department in Tyler so I have seen both the good and bad. Some areas have not changed at all while others I can hardly recognize. Just remember that the area is part of the bible-belt and tends to be a little "over conservative" sometimes. Amazingly, still lots of folks in the area that have never been out of the state (and I know of a couple that have never been more than 100 miles from their home). Out of my graduating class there were only 4 people that I am aware of that actually went directly to a 4-year University (most went to Tyler Junior College). I still vividly remember going back to visit some friends in the area and telling them about my work (was with a Big 6 Consulting firm at the time). One refused to ever talk to me again since I "married outside my race". Another flat out called me a liar and said "BS. No-one could ever do even 1/2 of what you said you have done". Of course this particular person was one that had never been more than 100 miles from their house. Just be prepared for closed minds and a little racism (far from everyone but you will run into pockets of it).
The Flint/Whitehouse/Bullard area is probably a good place to start looking for a house. Still plenty of land in that area and you are close to Lake Tyler of Lake Palestine if you like fishing. |

Super Busy day looking at rentals. Found a house we like in Flint. Looked at apartments and a lot of duplex communities. I cant do an apartment. Most duplexes wont suit either. Going to have to pony up it looks like for a rental home. The market for rentals is very strong in south tyler/ flint. The rent for the homes is in the 1200-1500 range. Hopefully some more options will open up on craigslist and we can make a few calls. We liked south tyler.
We did not have time to check out the 'country' around tyler. Ideally we could find something nice and newish in the country or on some ranch somewhere. We got in late on Thursday because of the storms. DFW was closed/ cancelled flights, etc. Friday was booked. we only really had half the day today to look around and we looked at at least a dozen places. |
|
If you looked at duplexes across from a subdivision called "The Ranch", then you were right across the road from me Closer into town, there is some kind of Arabian Horse ranch. I think it may be kind of like a bed and breakfast. I'm not really sure, but my wife wants to go. |

Haven't heard anything of a new range on Hwy 64,
There's some construction beginning at the intersection of 64 and 279 but don't think that would be one. There is another shooting facility East of Hwy 314 and Hwy 64 but I think it's trap and skeet. Chandler here btw. |

Just seeing this.
Not much help, but one of the best dentists you will find anywhere is Rick Coker in Tyler. Saying that as one dental professional about another. I've seen his work and known him for a long time. I'd trust him with my work and with any member of my family. Dave |

He goes to the big baptist church in flint. He offered to do my wife's root canal free of charge because our insurance didn't cover it (insurance covers it after 1 year of enrollment) |

The owner is George Hannah, one of the best guys you'll ever meet. 50 bucks a year for a membership which is unlimited rifle and pistol range although they aren't spectacular yet, 4.50 a round for trap, skeet, or 5 stand.... But the best part is, cost plus shipping on all powder, primers, presses, etc. order one press and you've paid for your membership for 2 years and I like shooting moving targets as well. East Texas rifle and pistol club is a nice range, I believe it's 120 a year, excellent shape, they do a little shot gun sports but it's not up to par with buffalo creek nor is it registered competition. They also have idea/uspsa/steel/3 gun there. I like the range but went to work out of town, member ship lapsed, and now they want me to do an orientation and jump through a bunch of hoops to rejoin after I ran all their shotgun sports for them free of charge for a couple of years just because I enjoy it. 31 west is the longest range we have at 600 yards. If you like to fish, Tyler is bass fishing heaven. We've got Fork, Palestine, Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, and many smaller awesome lakes to fish very close to us. Excellent winery in Bullard (Keipersol), bad ass class 3 store on the loop (hotrod arms), a couple of indoor ranges, and plenty of other stuff to do. I grew up in Longview, left for the Marine Corps for 12 years and landed just east of Tyler when I came back. Great place to live, just watch school districts if you have kids. Try to stay on the south side of town or look into private schools. |
