Hi all, fairly new resident of Houston and was wondering what ranges everyone likes. I live in Greenway so the only close option I've found has been Top Gun, which was kind of shitty and seemed more geared towards people who don't know what they're doing or talking about so the guys behind the counter are very dishonest and everything is super expensive. I'd like to find something better if its possible.

Any good indoor ranges? Outdoor? IDPA or similar? Also I would strongly prefer a place that allows aluminum cased pistol ammo as I have a ton of it because my old indoor range allowed it.

Thanks! :)

Tagged, I'd like to know as well (idpa, 3 gun in particular). Moving out to Houston next weekend.

Also was wondering which indoor ranges are wheelchair or handicapped accessible/friendly.

WHIDPA and PSC IDPA are the ones I attended.

PSC IDPA fills up quickly, as it is shot at a nicer range. Given the same temperature, it feels 10-20 degrees cooler at PSC because of the grass and trees.

PSC is also probably the best range in the area, but the rules kind of suck.

Practical shooting matches in the Houston area:

IDPA - Matches every weekend and matches on weeknights several nights a week
West Houston Shooters Club - West side of town
Thunder IDPA - North side of town
PSC IDPA Southeast side of town
Trainwreck IDPA Southeast side of town
Shiloh IDPA Northwest side of town

USPSA - Clubs all around town, matches every weekend somewhere, many at the same ranges as the IDPA clubs above.
Texas South Section - Covers all clubs in Houston area

3-Gun
West Houston Shooters Club - West side of town
Cawthon Cartridge Club - An hour+ NW of town but worth the drive.  Lots of long range shooting, jungle runs, high round count stages.
Thunder Shooters North and Northwest side of town depending on the match.

I've shot at most of these clubs so ask if y'all have any questions.

Not into IDPA so I can't help you there.

In general, I think you'll find that indoor ranges in Houston are pricey for what they are. I tend to avoid them.

Example: Tactical Firearms (W Houston) is $20/lane/hr, pretty nice and you can even shoot .50 BMG (though why you'd want to is another kettle of fish)

Outdoor ranges are a little scarcer and you get what you pay for I guess. One thing you'll find is that these ranges tend to limit dynamic, positional and especially rapid shooting.

Examples:
Hot Wells (NW Houston) is $10/gun all-day, pistol bays from 7-25 yds, skeet, sporting clays, 25, 50 and 100 yd rifle ranges from bench only()
American Shooting Center (W Houston) $15/gun or person all-day, not familiar with their pistol ranges, but rifle from 50-600 yds. Shotgun stuff too.

IMO, the grail for Houston shooters is a private club-type range. The two that come to mind are Bayou Rifles (W & SW Houston), particularly if you want to reach out with a rifle, and PSC, which is good for more dynamic shooting from what I hear. I've been on the waitlist for Bayou Rifles for close to 6 months now, and PSC closed their waitlist last I heard, because there were over 1100 people on it. That's to join of course. Both of those clubs host regular competitions that aren't usually restricted to members.
