In 36 days I will be moving to DFW for work, and I have a few questions.

If I have a valid DL I can just turn it in for a TX one correct? The DPS website is a little vague on what is required.

Where can you shoot that doesn't suck? I shot at quail creek a few years ago and it was overloaded with morons. I know there is limited public land in TX is it worth it to drive up to OK? FMJ bans/range nazism is rampant from what I've seen.

Where/What are the good LGS' around town? Ive been to academy and cabelas, so I'm looking to diversify, any places to flat out avoid? Distance doesn't matter to me

Thanks Gentlemen!

Where you gonna be? DFW is a massive area. We can probably help you better if we know the city you'll be in.

Yes, you more or less trade up your current DL for a Texas one, so long as yours is current and valid. I'd imagine they may want some supporting ID documents as well though. Give the DPS drivers license office in the area where you'll be moving. Despite the long lines on site, I've always gotten someone on the phone pretty quick.

If everything goes according to plan, I will be working in Uptown but I'm going to be staying in extended stay until I get everything locked down. I might try to stick towards the airport to be centrally located

But I have Family in the 35W/114 area

For the Driver's license you need a VALID DL and you will turn that in with your application.
You also need proof of residence (signed/dated lease), birth certificate, social security card..etc  <I think you only need two of these. I ended up having to drive back to my house to get these because somehow I didn't know I needed them. You are allowed to bypass the written and driving tests by turning in your Valid out of state DL, but you still have to pass a vision test.

The best thing to do is bring as much identifying documentation as you can think of because the lines are probably long and you don't want to have to go back.

Welcome!  There are a few private ranges in the area that give you a safety brief, then give you a key and tell you not to be stupid.  I know some don't like it, but look at GT Distributors off the loop.  What field of work?

You're going to have a hard time finding a public range that isn't fairly heavily regulated. One indoor range was recently burned to the ground by an idiot shooting tracers. Elm Fork in Dallas has nice facilities including rifle, pistol, and shotgun. They'll let you shoot FMJ on the 50 yd range but not 100.

We have a nice private club in Haltom City. Most public ranges have either range nazis, idiot shooters or both.
There are not a lot of public ranges on our side of the Trinity River, but we do have a much better class of people.

Thanks, I'm in Property Management or Information Tech depending on what wages are. I've looked at GT cant wait to swing through.

I'm liking the Fort Worth Side of town, I'm most familiar with it. But man it would be a haul to work downtown Dallas in the morning. Haltom City would be perfect, right near my RC shop! What the story on that private range? I'd love to get myself and my father involved

Haltom City Rifle and Pistol Club. We are just off Hwy. 121 at Minnis Dr. Currently we have a lot of construction and improvements in progress. All shooting positions are on concrete with concrete block benches. The benches have a wooden shelf between them that can be removed for prone shooting. All stations are covered, and the concrete apron extends out far enough so your brass never gets in the dirt or grass. We have 2 25 yard falling plate racks, about 10 25-50 yard positions, about 12-14 100 yard positions and 4 200 yard positions. We also have 3, I think, 15 yard stations partially enclosed for CHL quals and other shooting with targets on a pulley system. Those are the only stations that can use a silhouette style target.

Some people think our safety rules are too strict, but they have kept us open when many other ranges have closed.
The website has all info on joining and the rules.
Matches are open to the public/ non-members. Several of us on Arfcom are members there or shoot matches there.

As for living in Tarrant county and working in Dallas the area up around 114 and 35W makes access to either Fort Worth or Dallas manageable. It is a good compromise location.

HTH,
Jim

I see in the rules all rifles and shotguns cannot be loaded with more than 5 rounds...are they for real?

Yes, it's for real. Several years ago we had problems with guys loading full mags, shooting a group, and failing to unload during cease fires to go down and change targets. There were also problems in the early '90s, I think, and later with guys buying SKS's and having slamfires due to the firing pin sticking when the bolt wasn't degreased. After several problems that rule was instated.
The only time it is really a hassle is when I shoot my Garand.

We have new bullet traps that replace dirt berms. Not long ago there were problems erroneously reported as coming from steel core ammo. M855 was among the ammo banned, but that rule has been revisited and should be removed shortly if it hasn't been already.
The only ammo that is uniformly banned is AP because it will tear the hell out of the steel traps. We also do not allow .50BMG or full-auto. We do like suppressors and expect to draw a crowd if you bring one.

Some of our 100 yard shooting positions are temporarily blocked by support posts for the overhead baffles. Many of the baffles will be removed and the post locations changed. In fact the shooting line will be changed slightly due to it not being square with the target line. Right now it looks screwy as hell, but have patience- it will get much better.

If you have time come down during a match. You can walk around and check it out. I will be shooting the steel plate match on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Come out and I will show you around.

One more thing on the DL, since I recently moved here without it, you will need to produce your SS card when you change to a Texas DL (proof of citizenship). I lost mine years ago and even though I had a passport I had to go to SS office and get a new one made.

I can't recall if I had to or not, I don't think I did.. I think there was a pamphlet at the office where you get your DL that listed about 15 things you could use, you were required to have two of them. I typically do not use a social security card whenever possible because I do not like the risk of identity theft. Make sure you keep your SS# covered while you are there.. I've heard that there are thieves who go to those offices just for the purpose of getting that SS#.. pretty sure there was a news article about it right around the time I went to get my DL!

As someone who also had to go through the DL process, you can just go to the SS office and get proof that you have one, a simple printed page. That will also suffice. They also (should) take W2s, a recent modification, so if you have one printed with your Texas address from your Texas employer should suffice.

Babes serves their food family style.  A lot of people aren't comfortable about that.

I'm right down the road in North Fort Worth/Keller near Cabelas. Remember the Babes in Roanoke is the original and still just has Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak on the menu the other locations have a couple of more things on the menu.

Welcome to Texas, by the way. If your looking to ride DART Obama regular schedule it'll be difficult living in the Roanoke area as I'm sure you already know. The Trinity Railway Express connects Fort Worth with Dallas with a few stops between them in some of the smaller towns. They do have DART service up into Denton and are bringing it into the DFW airport Terminal A very soon so it may continue to grow along the 114 corridor eventually possibly out towards Texas Motor Speedway.

Yeah I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going to be Roanoke or closer to Dallas, depends on jobs. I know my GF wants to be in Dallas, I'd rather be in Fort Worth.

Welcome to TX!
I live about 20 min west of Roanoke and haven't made it up to any of the local ranges.
There's another place around other than Quail Creek called Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds,
but I believe they too don't allow FMJ...

I used to live about 25 min south of Ft. Worth so I'm friendly with some folks around there and
happen to know a guy who has some land with a backstop, thats where I go to shoot. The
downside is its over an hour drive.

If you happen to make it to any ranges west of the metroplex let me know, I'd be glad to join you.

Its a possibility, I'm interviewing for a job downtown Dallas, if that works out I will be living closer out that way. If not I want to be in North FT Worth/Denton Area. I currently have family in Roanoke.

I guess I could always take the train to Dallas for work.
