A week from today (Nov. 16th), I will be traveling to Texas with my wife and a couple of friends.  We're planning on doing a hard-hat tour of the Battleship Texas and a Johnson Space Center tour in the Houston area and touring the USS Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi.

Are there any other things we should try to see in the Houston and/or Corpus Christi areas or anywhere between those 2 areas?  What about good places to eat in those areas?  When traveling, I prefer not to eat at chains that I can eat at here at home.

Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Houston has an amazing selection of great food.  What are you looking for?

Well, I'm allergic to shellfish so I try to stay away from seafood.  I'll eat just about anything else though.

You can check out the Texas State Aquarium while you are in the area of the Lexington.

Plenty of Mexican food in Corpus.

Lots of people like Kiko's, but I prefer Alcapulco's because it's a bit cheaper and not usually as crowded.

Take the ferry over to Port Aransas then drive south on Mustang Island to Corpus.

Shiner isn't too far out of the way, if you want to visit the Spoetzl brewery and sample some Shiner beer.

If your here a couple of days, consider driving to the Orange area and do a swamp tour.  The swamp in that area is not as spectacular as what you see further east, in Louisiana, but is is still impressive.

If the weather is not cold and you like fishing, consider a charter for Speckled Trout in Galveston Bay.   Mid week trips are around $500/day I've used this guy a couple of times and he is great ––->  Captain Dave

Call ahead to make sure that the Battleship Texas is open.  Last I had heard it was taking on water or something like that and was closed but maybe I'm wrong.  Within sight of the Battleship Texas is the San Jacinto museum and monument which is pretty neat.  You can go up to the top for a cool view.

Near Galveston is Seawolf Park.  There's a submarine and destroyer escort on display.

The battleship is open again.  Too bad you don't eat seafood, the Monument Inn near the ship/monument is a local restaurant with great food.  The have other things to eat.
