Ok, so I feel a little weird asking this, but.....Anybody in the DFW area want to teach me to fish?

I used to fish a lot as a kid, but I have not wet a line in over 20 years.  Ive got some new poles and a fishing license but I really dont know where to go, or what gear to use.  Im sure I could figure it out eventually, but I could really use some advice and help.

I live near Crowley so Benbrook is close , Joe Pool is not to far either.  Thats the other thing, where to go to actually have a chance at catching fish.  The other part is I cant remember how to clean and gut a fish, and I would hate to catch something and end up wasting it, trying to figure out how to gut/clean and prepare a fish for eating.

Help me hometown heroes, your my only hope

I've had good luck at Rocky Creek at Benbrook lake. The problem with shore fishing is that you are fishing from the shore and usually cant get to the better spots. Thats why I prefer creeks and rivers when fishing from the shore as the water is easier to read. That being said I havent fished Benbrook or any other place really since 2005, since thats when the tags on my boat expired and life led me in other directions.

If you have cable or satelite tv, fishing shows are a good start.

Stock tanks, golf course ponds are a good place to start.

Alos depends on what kind of rod you bought yourself. Would you go deer hunting with a 22? Or squirrel hunting with Beowulf?

Panfish are on beds this time of year and fun to catch if you can find them. As mentioned, big lakes suck for shorefishing unless you are in a great spot. Sand bass schooling season starts soon and a ton of fun if you are in the right spot.

Look up Royce Simmons at gone fishin on Lake Richland Chambers. Book at half day trip with him. You will catch fish, sand bass/hybrids. He'll clean the for you and I'm sure he'll show you how. Nice guy. He has everything, you just need to show up, fish and learn.

Not yet, my two year old son is starting to do some amazing casting with his spiderman fishing pole I bought him a few weeks ago. He'll be on the lake soon.

Step 1: On a boat with a fish finder, go to a lake.

Step 2: Troll around the lake drinking beer, looking for a spot with a ton of fish on the fish finder.

Step 3: Pull out your explosive of choice (hand grenades work well)

Step 4: Light fuse for your explosive of choice

Step 5: Throw your explosive of choice into the lake

Step 6: Double check that your explosive made it into the lake, and not into the boat due to a horrible drunken throw.

Step 7: Drink a beer.

Step 8: Use net to scoop up dead fish that float to the surface.

Step 9: ???

Step 10: Profit

I agree,
For too long I have been strapped to a city, Either due to the military stationing me there, or retiring to Fort Worth because thats where the job was.  I really miss it and want to get back to fishing and hunting again.

Sometimes you just don't get the chance. Google "Polish guy gets his hand blown off" it's on liveleak, I'm not posting the link, it's pretty graphic.

A lot of times electricity works better.  It's not as dangerous, and the prison stay isn't as long.

Go get some spinners with the little feathers on them.  Sometimes called rooster tails.  Get 4 different colors, be sure white is one of the colors.  Your casting should be done at an angle to the water, not straight out from the beach. Bigger fish like to hang out near the drop to deeper water.  When you cast at an angle, your bait hangs out in this area longer.  Real in just fast enough to make the jig spin, no need to wag the pole around. Walk around the pond/lake as much as you can.  Fish like to hang out in one two spots and don't explore much.

If the fish aren't biting then change colors.  If they still aren't biting then you might come back at a different part of the day.

I'm assuming freshwater?

If you wanted saltwater I could tell you what I do, of course YMMV. Sometimes my methods work and sometimes they don't.

Just make sure you aren't in a metal hulled boat. You might also want to pull your engine out of the water.

If you're a hot chick, I'm sure plenty of us will be willing to help.  Otherwise, I suggest getting a cold case of beer and showing up at a boat ramp one afternoon.

There's a reason it's called fishing and not catching.  That is all.

I could set a waterbody record with some of the alligator gars in this one area I know about. Guess I took that photo Tuesday night.  I have never really fished for them before since I always considered it a trash fish. I was a trout fishing/whitewater guide in New Mexico during summers in college so I have a huge pile of fishing gear. Just not anything for alligator gar/carp/drum. I looked into some larger tackle rods at Academy but they all suck compared to my Abu Garcia stuff.

Think that gar was about 3-3.25 feet long.

As a kid I grew up obsessed with fishing and later girls.  I still can't figure either one of them out completely but have learned some do's and don'ts. Don't fish in the middle of the day, especially when it's hot and the water warms up.   If you're restricted to fishing from the bank using large minnows catch a variety of fish bass, catfish, gasper (freshwater drum).  When they aren't biting you can have fun with carp using carp dough bait or even canned corn which you thread on a hook.

I'm fortunate to live with lakefront property and it's a productive stretch, so much that when the lakes up the bass tournement anglers flock here some about every third weekend.  I do well with gummy type minnow imatations like the 'Bass Assassin' or shad imitaions and when they quit hitting that caught some good fish with fake gummy crawdads.  One of the biggest freshwater fish I ever caught was one of the last ones I caught when the lake was up and on a whim I cut up some rank deer meat into 2" long pieces and a 16lb bluecat yanked my rod into the water.  If you stay interested in fishing it'll come naturally to you.

I remember reading about them catching gars on the Trinity that were about 7-8 ft in length.  Never thought I'd read about guided fishing in Dallas.

Gar people get up into Dallas on the river. In 2010 when they were filming River Monsters, the alligator gar episode, I met them fishing near Downtown whilw they were scouting locations. They fished as far south as Crockett I believe. The fish caught for the episode was caught SE of Richland Chambers I believe.
