I picked up this TEXAS hat/jacket device (marked J. Linfield) back in the early 80s at a yard sale here in Virginia for a buck.
I took it to a couple relic shows years ago and was told everything from it was a Spanish-American War piece to it was made in England and came through the blockade as a private purchase. It was funny but by the second show I took it to everyone was a "expert" and the dealers followed me around trying to buy it. Seems the word got around. 
Even if you can't help I thought you might enjoy the device all the same. I'll cross-post to GD as it seems a lot of Texans and relic hunters hang out there.
