Wife is planning a trip to New Orleans for my birthday in a few weeks.  Never been there.   Question is It legal to carry and worth the trouble with having to check at airport?

Does LA prohibit CHL in bars like TX?  If not, any places a TX CHL prohibited (besides secured area of airport)?

I was there in January for a few days, can't comment on CC, BUT...

One of the places my gf wanted to visit was "Mother's Restaurant", a popular hole in the wall place, I think "W" Bush visited there after Katrina. When you walk in, it is very stark, not what you'd expect, and there's a black NOLA cop and another kid working the door like a club (they don't serve alcohol to my knowledge). Then there's a line to the cash register to order and pay for your food, then you're seated and they bring your food out to you.

So we find a table near the kitchen. Most of the cooks are black, there's an older white guy who's some type of manager who running around, then out of the back, comes another old NOLA cop, black guy, almost looks like he has parkinson's disease or something by the way he walks, he has an empty plate like he just finished eating.

The guys in the kitchen are cutting up, the manager guy goes back there and tells them something, they all go back to work. The manager guy is running back and forth in the restaurant. Then the older cop stops the manager guy behind our table and they start having a quiet, but intense conversation. Then the cop tells the manager guy to "shut the fuck up." And the conversation fell apart from there and they didn't talk again while we were there. The other cop working the door laughs.

I'm not sure what transpired, the white guy might have been totally out of line, but I didn't want to be there anymore. The food was good, but I didn't want to go back.

The other interesting thing we ran across was visiting one of the museums next to the Catholic Church on Jackson Square. Several hundred people just in the immediate vicinity in front of the church and museums, some sort of youth dance program going on. We decided to tour the museums. From the second floor, you can look out over the street in front where all the people are gathered, and watch the drug sales and handoffs at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

I'm used to seeing that shit here on the south side of Dallas, but not in front of tourist attractions, museums and churches.

All I'm saying is be careful.

You made me actually go out there and read the LA rules...  So, basically, pretty much LA is in line with TX, except you can't carry in a church unless given authorization.  I don't like the bar clauses.

I can't change who was actually there.

The drug deal we watched, was a white guy buying from a black guy, does that make it all better?

Being a smart-ass doesn't mask the fact that you purposely didn't answer my question but I knew you weren't going to anyway; people who get called on their bullshit usually don't.

Checking at the airport is extremely simple.  I checked my handgun to and from Dallas with no problem.  At NO the TSA guys are in the ticket area, not sure you have to declare to them but I did anyways and they told me to watch for my bag to hit the conveyor belt at the back of the machine.

The TSA gorilla, borrowed from Samsonite, tossed my bag and said have a nice day.  Thankfully I don't carry anything fragile because he bounced the bag of the conveyor belt like he was paid by the bounce.  If only he had known it was a glock.

I was in Baton Rouge, in NO definitely carry.  One wrong turn at night and you're in a bad area fast.

Thanks for the info guys.  New Orleans is not my first choice,  but I don’t want to be a jerk and tell her no thanks.   The Dr. she works for moved here after Katrina and has been telling her about the great places to eat and things to see so she is excited.  She went a few times when she was at Miss State,  but that has been 17 or 18 yrs ago.

Looks like the main difference in their CC laws is how they define restaurants and places that sell alcohol.   Handgunlaw.us (thanks for the link Txinvestigator)  recommends you don’t carry any place that serves alcohol as opposed to Texas were we have the 51% signs.  That will make planning a little more challenging,  but no biggie.   Now I need to figure out which gun or guns make the trip… or maybe an early birthday present to myself is in order.  Been eyeing either a Beretta Storm or Nano 9mm as a new summer carry gun.

Is it just you two going? If so, maybe you can get a few more couples to go. This way there's a group.

The wife and I have been to NO twice and stayed in the Quarter both times. I never carried, and never felt like I needed to. Its not hard to stay where the crowds are and avoid going down dark alleys at night. Following these two suggestions makes it no different than the majority of other cities in the U.S. where incidentally, you should follow the same rules.   YMMV of course.

+1.
My daughter went for an interview at LSU Med Center in NOLA, stayed there for 3 days.  Just have to be smart of where to go/not to go and when, and aware of the surrounding.  Of course, having Concealed helps.

I'm originally from New Orleans - been living in Dallas area since 2006.

Just about every place to eat down there serves alcohol. New Orleans gets a bad rap because of the stupidity that happened on the national stage during Katrina, but it's really no worse than any other major metropolitan city.

Things to know:

Be careful in Orleans Parish if you're out of state and concealing. Don't give NOPD any reason to think you have a gun on you - even legally. There are a lot of good cops down there, but there's also a lot of cops that just want to ruin someone's day. You don't want to spend a couple of days in central lockup.

In the French Quarter - stay in well lit areas and on the main streets. Don't venture down quiet streets as a shortcut. This advice applies to any bar area of any city, but it's worth repeating here.

Don't get stupid drunk in public. It happens a lot in New Orleans, an I'm not saying you'd do it - but again, worth repeating here.

Good places to eat - there's tons. The aforementioned Mother's has great food. I'd recommend Mr. B's Bistro too. If you do choose to hit a straight up bar - go to the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monte Leon (across from Mr. B's). Bring your wallet, because the drinks aren't cheap - but the atmosphere is awesome.

Non Bourbon street recommendations - WW2/DDay Museum is well worth the visit. Plan on a whole day because it's a lot of reading. The Aquarium is always fun. Take a ride on the Natchez Riverboat. Hit up an airboat swamp tour. There's a ton of things to do there. Plan it right and you'll have a great time.

Thanks for the info.  I have heard the WWII museam is really good and plan on seeing it.  My wife will not be excited that it takes more than her 20 minute attention span allows,  but hey its my birthday!  An airboat swamp tour would be kickass also!

A couple days in a N.O. jail rates pretty high on my never go there list,  so I will be really careful how and where I carry.  I can always fall back on my ninja skills.    haha
