I am having some problems with my pistol.  I tried searching the archives for a 1911 smith but came up with nothing in the Houston area.  Could someone give me some suggestions please.

Thank you.

There are many problems that you can fix yourself, and the forum can help if you describe the problems.

The lightwieght Commander is one of those pistols I've always wanted, but they are rare these days. Count yourself lucky to own one, and I'm also betting on an easy fix.

There's a guy at Gun Emporium in Conroe (Mike) who is a good 1911 smith. He built me a nice one from a handful of G.I. parts several years back and he does good work. Still, you very well may be able to fix most problems.

This is my carry gun. I was doing my routine draw and dry fire practice and function check when I noticed the hammer will fall to half cock with thumb safety off and grip safety not depressed.  Then after doing this a couple of times it would not drop the hammer even with the thumb safety off and the grip safety depressed.  It just locked up. I have had this gun for about 2 years and carry it every day, all day and night.  Kind of glad I did not need it!

While I do like to do minor work on my stuff I kinda wanted a pro to look at it since this is my carry piece(luckily, I have another one to carry)

Thanks for the suggestion about Gun Emporium

Edit: The wife said I should use depressed instead of squeezed or squoozed

I've replaced sears, hammers, etc. without incident, but you might as well have a gunsmith go through it.

Never have used him but I heard  he is an excellent 1911 smith. He is located in Stafford

do you let the slide close under full spring pressure on an empty chamber?

sounds like you need a new hammer and sear...

I don't think so.   Looks to me is all he needs is a new sear spring.

You could install it yourself.

I have a Jimenea Springfield.  Incredible work.  I thought he retired though.

Did you strip the gun down?  My sear got hung up and caused a similar issue, I took it out, replaced it, and it worked like new.

It could be any number of issues.  If you're not competent to do the job yourself, I recommend with Eddie J. or Ed Vandenberg.  You shouldn't just drop in new parts on a 1911 and expect it to function properly.  Takes some fitting usually.

Thanks for the information.  I have been out of pocket for a few days.  I will take it apart and see what looks out of place and then decide which way to go.

I am close to the Heights so I might try Herman.

Thanks again

Ed Vandenberg would be my choice.  He is one of the top pistolsmiths in the country.  He has done plenty of work for me including a ground up custom 9mm 1911 commander.  Great work.
