So on Christmas Eve, I took my family over to my wife's parents house to exchange gifts and what not. Soon as we pull up I see something fluttering across their yard in the dark and hear a horrible screeching noise. I saw what ever it was land in the neighbors yard and so I went to see and found this little guy. He hung around for quite a few minutes, while the wife dug around in the purse for the camera. He was just sitting there on the other bird, which the other bird was in distress obviously because he was caught by the little owl and I think it was the little bird screeching I heard when getting out of the car. Any move or noise the little bird made just made the owl tighten his grip on the bird more.
he was gone when we returned a few minutes later after taking the kids inside. can anyone tell me what kind of owl this is? we don't know and our google searches have been inconclusive. |

screech owl - brown variation. They come in grey too. They have an eerie trill call that begans high and and drops, sometimes continuing as a lower call. I can imitate them and have two or three flying back and forth in the trees overhead trying to locate the source of the call. They're vocal and answer back constantly while they're looking.
An old southern wives'e tale was if you heard one at night that meant someone was going to die but if you propped a shoe up against the door it would ward that spell off. My grandmother didn't like it when I called them up and would prop a shoe if I did. If you hear one during the day thats a bad sign, just sayin'. |
