Anyone ever taken a ride on the Austin Steam Train? (which I understand is not really a steam train anymore since they've used a diesel engine for the last 12 years, but still...) What's the ride like? Is there a big difference between the "classes" of cars that you can ride in, and which would you recommend? I've seen the pics on the website, but I'm wondering if anyone here has actually been on it, as there's often a big difference between pictures and reality....

1st wait til the weather cools off.  nothing spectacular, fun for the kiddos, you can see the same scenery going north on 183 and take a right at 29, go to Burnet and turn around and come back, ehhh

No idea on that particular run, but would probably be fun, even with the diesel. Its' always fun to ride a train.

On their website there's some really cool photos of the steam loco rebuild. Basically rebuilding the whole thing, very cool.

Do yourself a favor and pay for the first class ticket in a private room.  The legroom in the coach class car was not fun and I'm not exceptionally tall (6ft.).  It was a fun ride when I did it back in the day.  That may have been mostly due to my travel companion though.

Yeah, I kinda figured that....but I haven't been on a train since I was a kid in Alaska, and unless you want to drive all the way out to the Texas State Railroad (or pay a whole lot more money to ride Amtrak somewhere) this is the only thing like that in this area. It sounds like a neat way to spend a couple hours, if nothing else.

It is fun.  We have taken the kids twice.

We paid for the Air Conditioned cars.  But if it cools off some having the windows down would probably be fine.

Not much in the way of scenery, as said earlier, you see the same thing driving north on 183.  But the kids enjoyed it.
