| Hey guys from up North behind the lines. Well...I'm probably going to be moving out of the hellish state of NY and down to TX. I'm looking in the Carrolton area as I have some friends down there. I wanna hear everyone's thoughts on this. Right now it's more than an idea and we're beginning the planning phases of everything. Thoughts engage.... |
|
Texans are a bunch of arrogant jerks, we don't allow people to hunt/shoot for free on our property, we don't believe in public lands, we don't like being told what to do, or compared with. It's hot, TX beaches suck, too much driving, too many people not know how to drive, etc... Also, a TX drivers license & license plate does not make you a Texan.
Do you still want to move here? If so, please remember to keep Austin Weird. |

BTW, the selection of food is awful, overpriced, and drinks are watered down. Why would you want to come down and share our misery? What are you hearing? |

a few parts of Carrollton are OK, but North Dallas, West Plano, or Addison may be more to your liking, and a better area, but still close to Carrollton. +1 also, depending on where you'll be working, you may want to consider heading out Hwy 114 direction (Southlake, Trophy Club, Roanoke) |

Heat in NY is muuuuuuuuuch different here, even with your temps at 105 at the index level. The sun is directly overhead, and it's much hotter here. Even in JAN,FEB here you can get a sun-tan! Enjoy your new freedom! |

Not that far of a drive from NY and the people are nice, there is plenty of open land, and the bingo parlors are awesome. You might want to reconsider. Get ready for the heat. 25 days straight of 100+ degree days. It's been so hot in DFW the chicken ranchers are giving their chickens crushed ice so they don't lay hardboiled eggs. Just remember, we like our culture down here just fine...and don't care much fer yankees who won't assimilate. |
|
OP, The biggest difference is the people. Folk here are very friendly, we'll always help a neighbor out, but don't expect us to sugar coat answers. Down here we don't like liberal politics, the govt in our wallets, or rude folks from out of state. What do I mean by the last part? I've walked the streets of NY and you pass thousands of folks on a sidewalk. If I stop to ask one of them for directions, they'll all ignore me like I must be crazy for talking to someone. Not here....in Texas when someone says hello or good morning...we expect a friendly reply.
Now, it's hot in the summer, traffic in the metroplex sucks, and we eat steaks. If you're a vegetarian, then stay there or look for a place in Austin. Thanks y'all! |
| I moved to Texas in 1980 from Buffalo, and have now lived in Texas longer than any one place in my life. I told my sister years ago, "Once Mom and Dad are gone, I can't think of any reason to go back to NY." They're gone and I was right. BTW OP, are you in New York City, or some other place in New York? You'll be surprised how many people here think the entire state is like NYC. |
| Please don't come to El Paso. We are up to our eyeballs in east cost people moving here and wanting to recreate the northeast. Stay away. We don't want or need you but if you insist just don't tell your friends how good it is here. Heck the NH " the old man of the mountain " moved here. You can find him righ up there on the east side of the Franklin Mountians. |

If you want to come to Texas then why the hell are you going to Dallas.
I have lived in small towns all my life so I will have a biased amswer. My best advise is to move to the College Station Area. Lots of stuff going on, lots of friendly people, the best college football experience. Few things you will have to be aware of: Complete strangers will wave to you and or talk about the weather. That's OK, just wave back and act natural. Hold a conversation you'll learn abunch It's hot here. Hot as hell don't be surprised to wear shorts and a t shirt on new years day. Lastly, if you do come here leave the failed liberal polices of the state you came from at the border |

I think a lot of people come here thinking they are leaving them behind, but it seems they always find 'one law or ordinance' that they think needs to be changed here. I have talked to a fair number of transplants and even the most well meaning seem to want to change 'something'.
I suspect this may be Tboys' experience as well. (and explains his posts) Suffice to say, Texas is pretty full up, we really don't have any more room. Sorry. |

I'm positive a yankee will mix in well in College Station. If not, you can always drive down the road to Austin, where liberalism helps keep Austin Weird. FWIW, a conservative northern does not make a conservative TEXAN. Also, LEO + NY attitude will do WONDERS with the locals and we LOVE foreigners making fun of how we can't speak. Carpetbaggers make the best neighbors, especially in the country. |

No, in the context of what I was speaking of, it's usually something from the state they left, and it's usually not good. i.e. - I have been told.... ..... I think you have the right to have a gun, but I think it's too easy here for you to get them. ..... You guys have too many gunshows here, not like where I am from. ..... I can't believe I have to pay to hunt here. The governement should take control of more land. ..... I can't believe you have the right to drive on the beach here, they should do something about that. ..... You mean, you are allowed to burn the brush on your land? That does not seem very environmentally friendly. I will probably remember more. ETA: As for open carry - I live out in the country, I open carry around my place all the time. - Man free to shoot rattlesnakes at will. I don't really have a desire to strap on a leg holster when I ride into town. - but if you want to, I am not against changing that law. The silly knife laws don't particularly bother me - however, I thought the silliest were city ordinances, not the state laws. - i.e. Texas says 5-1/2" blade OK, San Antonio says 2-1/2" or less is OK (thats kinda silly) Although carrying a bowie knife would be kinda cool, though. Campus carry - doesn't really affect me, but I think it should be up the the school, not the State. |

That does not seem very environmentally friendly. I will admit I grew up in the north (although that was pretty much straight north, not the northeast)... Most of the things that bother me are things that are MORE restrictive down here than where I grew up... The things that most often piss me off besides the stuff I already mentioned is silly TABC rules (we should go to a Louisiana-like liquor code, liquor sold 24/7/365 at convenience and grocery stores), laws against gambling (should legalize it) and stuff like auto inspection and emissions testing (don't need it). Some of that stuff goes beyond what I grew up with... When I was a kid liquor laws where I grew up were worse than we live with now, but they've since repealed most of them. I'd also get rid of front license plates and a few other things like that if it were up to me. I will probably remember more. ETA: As for open carry - I live out in the country, I open carry around my place all the time. - Man free to shoot rattlesnakes at will. I don't really have a desire to strap on a leg holster when I ride into town. - but if you want to, I am not against changing that law. I probably wouldn't open carry most of the time etiher, but if I was going to the range (couple blocks from my house) it would be convenient not to need to conceal my handguns. And it would be nice just to not have to worry. I see no reason why people shouldn't be able to own and/or carry "daggers", balisongs, switchblades, etc... when they are allowed to carry a handgun. It is just silly, and I don't think silly laws should be on the books. Campus carry - doesn't really affect me, but I think it should be up the the school, not the State. I live in a college town so it is more of an issue for me... It shouldn't be up to the school, it should just be allowed Being up to the school rather that just being disallowed would be an improvement over the current situation though. Anyway, slowly but surely since I've moved here most things have moved in a positive direction... There are less "dry" counties, etc. If we could reverse the "anti-bubba" laws and get rid of the emissions tests things would be better. |

I am not wanting to argue with you as we probably agree more than disagree.
The reason I say it should be up the school is because I just don't like the government getting involved - for or against things. It's the same reason I am against the no smoking in restaurants laws.- I don't smoke, but it should be up to the restaurant. I have lived in Texas my whole life and never had any problems remembering to my buy liquor Mon-Sat. ...... and I can't buy beer before noon on Sunday? Oh the horror of it all....... If you run out of beer during the times they don't sell it, you are not buying enough. If I learned anything from the army is was the 7 P's: (Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance I think it's weird to see liquor in the grocery store when I go to other states. But, their state, their rules. and if a county wants to be dry, they should be allowed to do so, not mandated by state or federal laws. Would selling alcohol 24/7/365 make the state better? - probably not. Would legalized gambling make the state better? - probably not. (We would have no reason to stop in Oklahoma For that matter, the Libertarian in me says they should legalize all drugs. But then again, I don't think that necessarily would make things better, either. Inspection stickers and front license plates..... if those are things worth complaining about, sounds like things are pretty good. I don't like the emission testing either, so I live in a county that does not have it. As for the concealed handgun going to the range.... I usually have my rifles and pistols in cases in the trunk of my car or behind the seat of my pickup. Never had any issues with the sheriff's office. Quoted:

Carrolton PD Eggs people houses, fires them and then rehires them.
as if that wasnt bad enough they then arrested the home owner and charged him with 4 felonies and is not turning the evidence over on the case to his attorney. Id suggest looking in an area with a less corrupt police department. |
