Guys, I sold a pistol to a guy in FL. I shipped it to his FFL via UPS and they said it had to go priority overnight with signature required. It cost me $84 to ship. Is this correct and is there a cheaper (yet legal) way to ship a handgun? Is it the same for rifles? Thanks!

I agree that sounds way high. And anyone can ship a rifle USPS. Only dealers can ship handguns.
Also just FYI it is not illegal to ship to an FFL via UPS or Fed Ex Ground (by simply not telling them it is a gun), but it would violate the company policy, so if you ever needed to file an insurance claim you would be SOL (though I have heard of people filing claims for "gun parts" and being paid). The law that requires you to tell them it is a gun only applies if it is being shipped to a non-FFL. |

And $84 sounds about right. Here are the firearms shipping policies for UPS & FedEx: UPS allows Next Day Air Saver which is their cheapest service http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/firearms.html?srch_pos=3&srch_phr=handgun FedEx http://fedex.com/us/service-guide/terms/express-ground/index.html A cheaper option would have been using a licensed dealer to mail your handgun for you. USPS Priority Mail Flate Rate (medium) boxes go anywhere in the USA for about $11.00 plus insurance. For example: A $1,000 handgun w/insurance, postage and signature confirmation runs about $25........plus any fee the dealer charges. (I charge $10 plus actual postage & insurance) So.........having a dealer mail it for you would have saved considerable $$$. |
