Does anyone have any experience with the TXSG? I was active duty for a few years and then TXARNG for a couple years a while back and was looking at the Texas State Guard. I don't know anything about it though. Is it volunteer, or is it semi-military (paid), PT/age requirements, rank, anything. The info online was pretty vague. Also, is there any real benefit to joining? I don't really want to shave my beard if I don't have to lol.

There was a link to this a little while ago...trying to find it

I went to a couple of drills.

Good bunch of people -
Non paid unless your deployed
No real enlistments - strictly volunteer

Nothing overseas

From what I gathered they do mostly civil work in the event of say - a hurricane.
Hand out food water....logistics of helping people

I did want to do it but I was honest and told them I just could not commit the time.

I'm in the TXSG Texas Maritime Regiment. I have been in close to a year.  It has mostly Marines and former Sailors as members.

Its good training.  You have to want to give back to the citizens of Texas.  I have no experience in dealing with the army side of things because

I'm allergic to anything army or army flavored.

Contact your local rep.  You can attend the drill as a guest to see how they operate.

Personally, I have enjoyed my experience so far.

Click here for 21 pages from the State Guard topic.

It is a pretty informal discussion area, with a few inside jokes.  I've been in almost a year now and am really enjoying myself.  It's a pretty good mix of prior service and non-prior service folks.  Feel free to ask a question and you will probably get answers from several different perspectives.

As far as your beard-it is a no-go.  We follow military grooming standards as far as hair length and shaving.  You could keep a 'stache as long as it doesn't extend beyond the intersections of the upper and lower lips, and it doesn't hang lower than the top margin of the upper lip.

If you are willing to commit the time (and to a certain extent, your own money) it is a great way to pay it back as it's all about "Texans Helping Texas"

Thanks for the info. I think if I'm going to get back to mil-spec then I may just want to finish school (not much left) and go to the officer side of maybe the Air Guard. The Maritime side would do me some good though. I'm getting a degree in Maritime Admin at A&M Galveston. That'd be walking in to the lion's den for me being an Army guy in the Navy/Marines house.

The biggest benefit is giving back to your state, though there are things like tuition reinbursement, free CHL licenses, and other perks.
If you join up for the "whats in it for me?" aspect ill wager youll be disappoitned.
If you join up looking to volunteer and serve with other people who are there because they WANT to be, not because they are paid or even ordered by law to be...youll be heartily rewarded. Save for a few special cases, the TXSG isnt a source of monetary income.

Most fed mil my unit has come in personal contact with cant believe we do what we do for (in their words) "so little benefits".

ETA: Been in 17 months.

how does that work??

free CHL licenses

I have looked into it in the past and still think it would be great to get back into a military unit of sorts and help the state I love so much...
I am not as young as I once was... but still under the max age requirements...

Thank you brothers/sisters that are doing this now!!!!

If you would like any info on the TXSG Air Division, let me know.

Pretty simple. The state will waive 100% of the cost for the license and 50% for veterans of military. That goes for Federal, NG, and SG.
Your on your own for the cost of fingerprints, photos, and the class itself unless you can find someone who discounts the class or teaches for free.
I paid a grand total of $20 or so towards getting my license (pictures, fingerprints, postage), my class was taught by my former PLT SGT at no cost.

He's the only one I know of that does free classes for military and their immediate family. He also taught my wife's class 2 weeks ago.
