The WOD is the single most dangerous attack on our civil liberties-not the right to get high, but the right to keep the man out of your life.  This will get to the point that the common citizen will no longer support the police––once that happens they will be seen as an occupying army, not a protective force.

The most devastating part of the WOD is the financial toll it is bringing on our country.  Not only are the efforts fruitless and done in vain, but all of these needless agencies and government jobs/pensions created with it have produced a debt we cannot repay.  Anyone who supports the WOD at this point is a fool.

The US accepted defeat on the war on alcohol years ago and now needs to accept the defeat on the war on drugs now.  Our rights have been weakened over the years (no-knock warrants by SWAT teams, vehicle search, etc).  Why not merge the ATF & DEA duties where they belong - FBI & FDA?

Well, that story has quite a few facts. Not sure about the reference to " Tales."

I don't use any illegal drugs and I wouldn't even if they were legalized...  but I support legalization because it is the sensible thing to do.

If we taxed and regulated drugs like we do alcohol and tobacco and quit spending massive amounts of money catching, prosecuting and incarcerating people for petty drug crimes we could go an awful long way towards balancing our government budgets and be able to redirect a lot of our law enforcement judicial and corrections resources towards prosecuting violent criminals and thieves.  Plus we would put most of the drug cartels and gangs out of business, or at least cut off a lot of their huge profit centers, and that would have massive benefits in reducing crime and probably illegal immigration.  And if we were to cut off the gang violence and especially the cross the border problems by cutting off the cartel's money, we would take a lot of wind out of the gun banner's sails.

Really, who honestly believes that the "war on drugs" can ever be won, or will ever be won?  Like prohibition, it just isn't going to ever work.  The United States only suffered prohibition for 23 years and in that time it built a massive and powerful Italian (and to a lesser extent Irish) mafia that took years to break up.  We've been actively fighting the "war on drugs" over 40 years now and it has created massive and powerful hispanic, black and even Russian gangs which are in some ways worse than the old mafia ever was.

It will be a hard fight to end the war on drugs. There is so much interconnected money and private interests invested in the system at hand.

Interesting story, but why do we still let any law enforcement confiscate anything of value without proof of a crime being committed? Even worst to sell it without charges being filed and settled in court. This is theft by government under any definition...

We have a winner why the WOD keeps going on. Most time no charges are filed or are dropped when the property is seized and not returned. Only way property should be able to be seized is with a court order ON A CONVICTION, and only if proof the money or items are from illegal activities that was part of the crime.

You don't actually believe the .gov is going to "shrink" if it gives up on the war on some drugs, do you?  Closing prisons, and eliminating agencies, won't happen.  Government gets bigger not smaller.  It didn't shrink after prohibition, they just redirected their efforts.  Until they find something new to occupy them, expect the war on some drugs to continue.  This isn't about drugs, it's about control of the population.

If you and others continue to vote Republican/Democrat in federal elections then yes, the .gov will not shrink. But if people vote for alternatives like Ron Paul (who is technically a Republican) then there is no reason that the .gov will not shrink.

I understand where you are coming from, but I wouldn't consider it a complete failure if most if not all of the resources the government was using to fight the "war on drugs" was reallocated to fighting violent crime and thievery.  We'd still be ahead on tax money we could use to cut down on deficits if drugs were taxed and regulated like alcohol and tobacco.

I'd love it if we could actually cut the size of government, but I do agree with you that it would be a very tough fight to make that happen.

Rather than just toss the .gov under the bus as is the typical knee jerk reaction on Arfcom, I'll wait and see how it ends up.  My experience is the DEA just doesn't show up and start stealing shit.  If they are at your house two times prior on drug raids, and then show up to dig up your back yard, you need to take a long look in the mirror and ask why.   Plus because they found $140k in money vacuum packed in the back yard, they obviously are getting pretty good intel somehow.  Nothing wrong with having cash, but if you can't explain why you have (any amount of cash ((RICO ACT)) you better plan on it being taken until YOU prove its legit.)  Don't like it, but thats the way things are.

ETA:  legalizing drugs will not help, and is stupid.  Alcohol is legal, and yet with the millions spent on education annually (AA, MADD, etc.), still 50,000+ are killed every year by drunk drivers.  Wanna legalize a bunch of drug addicts recreational activities?  Not me.  Its bad enough going to games, events where alcohol is sold and consumed by idiots who use alcohol as an excuse to be a complete dick to the world.  Last thing I want is a moron tweaked out and trying to tell the world how things should be done.  Personally, when someone overdoses on narcotics is fine with me.  Less chance they get killing an innocent out of their own selfishness.
