| A buddy has a chance to buy a his first AR from someone at his job and asked me to look at it. It's a doudle star lower but I think it's a model 1 upper, a varmit model. It has " M1S 1/9" stamped on the barrel right above the gas block. I have never owned a either brand but it seems to be a part gun. It grouped minute of thumb today so it seems like a shooter but would like to know if it's a factory or part gun. BTW owner said he bought it as it is. |

The barrel is an E.R. Shaw, 1:9 twist, and has been marked by Model 1 Sales. It is highly unlikely that the Double Star lower left J&T Manufacturing with a competitors labeled part on it so I would say at first glance it's a parts gun. Nothing wrong with that unless he was told it was a Double Star factory build.
There are several dealers that buy Model 1 kits and parts and put them together into complete rifles for sale at gun shows. Nothing wrong with that, unless the dealer sells the AR as a "factory buillt" model produced by whoever's name is on the lower. At DHM this weekend, there was a dealer whose table (mid show, also sells primers/ powder) was covered with AR's built on several manufacturers lowers. The tags were marked with the lower reciever manufacturer's name but most of the uppers were identical and had a gas block on then that is produced under contract for M1S. All the upper receivers were oiled while the lowers were "dry" and most of the guns looked identical, 16" gas block carbines with a couple 20" gas block rifles. It was obvious that these were not the factory builds of the lower manufacturers. Hopefully the dealer disclosed to customers what they were. |
