One thing about him and guys from his era.
When you rooted for him and your home team, they really were the home team. He played high school ball in east Texas, collage at SMU, and of course for the Dallas Cowboys when they were actually in Dallas at the Cotton bowl. RIP old boy. |
| It's kind of odd, I was just watching Dale Hansen interview Walt Garrison last night and he told a story about a plane ride back from a game that everyone thought they were going to die and sure enough there was Dandy Don having a smoke and drining a scotch, cool as can be. |

His coolness and class really showed when placed in the commentator booth with an abrasive 'know it all' Cosell and a-hole Gifford. A true son of Texas.
I remeber one time Cosell used some big, condescending word and Meredith mocked him and asked "What the heck does that mean? People don't want to have to sit and listen to that while watching a football game." Cosell said, "I'm just trying to educate the masses" Meredith replied, "That not your job." LOL |

To put it more succinctly, Dandy Don never once played a home game outside of the state of Texas in his life. |

LOL People now don't realize this, but when MNF started it was more than another football game, it was a weekly event. Watching those games and listening to Cosell and Meredith made for some great entertainment. North Dallas Forty, by Peter Gent. 'Nuff said. |

Turn out the lights, the party's over.
RIP Don. I still remember my dad and I thinking Landry had lost his mind when we found out that he was replacing our quarterback with some dude who had been in the Navy for the past 4 years. We just KNEW noone could replace Don. He did keep Cosell in line too, didn't he? From reading the book about Cosell I understand it was an act, but we always kept hoping he would mouth off and Ali would clean his clock. Jim |
