and I have a few questions.
The job site is just east of UT @ Tyler & I'll be there middle to late next month; So how is the neighbor hood? Good hotel to stay at? Places NOT TO stay? Just did a trip to Albany GA & my company put me up in little Mogadishu ![]()
Places to eat? If I drive I plan to take a side arm & prolly one of the AR's...so any place to shoot? Indoors or out? Thanks in advance for the help. 7mm08 |

Neighborhood:
The nicest part of Tyler is the south part, including the South Loop and South Broadway. Even then, the north part of town around MLK Blvd, Gentry, and Texas College isn't bad at all really when you compare it to other bad areas around the state/country. Places to stay: We haven't stayed at any hotels here but we've have had family stay at the Fairfield Inn on the South Loop and the Hampton in on Troup Hwy, both pretty decent places. I drive by the Americas Best Value on I-20 pretty much every day and it doesnt look bad, its no 4 star hotel, just your typical motel. I know there is a Quality Inn and Holiday Inn Express over on the NW Loop that look decent too. Shooting: You might be able to bribe someone on here to take you to the ETRPC range over in Kilgore/Longview, which is a nice place to shoot, but private. There is Lock and Load over on the SW Loop which is indoor, and will get you mixed reviews. There is another private range pretty far south of town that is nice too, but again you'd have to get someone in the are to take you. Someone on here might have some land they might let you shoot on too. Places to eat: Plenty of good places to eat in town, it's about all there is to do, it just depends on what you're in the mood for and how far your willing to drive. Honestly, we are used to driving a fair distance to get anywhere around here. The people that planned the routes around/through Tyler should be shot though. It can be frustrating to get around town at times. |

bigthicket, IM sent to ya igotaleadfoot, Sounds like it will be an easy no thrill place to stay & work. My trip to Albany, GA was not a rest easy stay. As for food I'll eat most anything that doesn't eat me. Now as far as BBQ goes, I'm from GA so BBQ is pork to me but I do love a good beef brisket or ribs. I'm sure I'll find something worth writing home about. I'm not sure what kind of time I'll be able to make for shooting fun so I'll have to play that by ear. Any more info would be much appreciated, 7mm |

No,it is rooftop work.Just got my workorder for Wed.& Thu.,both days look to be warm. ETA: When you get there, you cannot see the new bldg.Go to the far drive and thru the gate.It is behind an existing bldg. ETA: Casa Ole...when you go back to the loop from the job, take a left, then left at the first light.Place is on the right.Really good mexican food... Hell, i ate lunch there all three days last week, will go again Wed.,maybe Thu. too |

Food:
Country Tavern on Hwy 31 between Tyler and Kilgore (Eastside of town) Great ribs and brisket. China Cafe on Loop by Home Depot (Buffet, eaten there several times and always great for a buffet) On The Border by Mall on Loop (Really good Tex Mex for a chain, get the hand made Gac) I think Clear Springs Cafe is still open on Hwy 69 South past Mall (Great comfort cooking) An absolute must is Andy's Frozen Custard on Hwy 69 South past Loop If you have time and don't mind driving about 40 miles Longview has a Great Asian Bistro called GZ's. Owners are NFA guys and it has World's class Sushi. http://www.gzasianbistro.com/ Let me know when you're here and if I in the area we'll go to ETRPC. |

FatCat,
Dam I'm gonna fatter while I'm there if I stop at every place you mentioned! As far as the shooting goes I'm still not sure if I'm flying or driving for the job. If I drive I'll bring a few toys. If I fly I'll be limited as to what I bring. I'l know more by the end of the week.

We've been going to the Jalapeno Tree on the South Loop pretty regularly.
We used to go to Casa Ole all the time especially when my wife was pregnant with our daughter. But they use too much MSG and messes with the wife's stomach too much now. It also helps that one of the local TV stations does a half off restaurant deal to the Jalapeno Tree. |

northwest side of town is suppost to be ghetto, all the nice places are on on the south part of town, all the good restaraunts and stores, ect. There is a value inn on the south west side of the loop thats only like 230 bucks a week and its not that bad. I stayed there a week and although the people there werent all that classy, the place was fairly quiet at night.
I was up there a few weeks ago for SWAT instruction and i can say that Tyler PD does NOT fuck around. I figured that they were some kind of quiet sleepy small town with no crime going on, then i learned that they are a fairly nice town but drug dealers and turds go there trying to set up business and gain new territory and tyler PD promptly squashes them. theres a fairly nice indoor range on the west side of 323 about a block south of the value inn and they were very warm and friendly. I would definately recommend that you give it a look. |

I'l know more by the end of the week.
