Well, I am leaving the great white north and headed to Texas in the next couple of weeks. Will be relocating to the Spring area around Houston. For those in the know, who do you guys recommend for internet service? I have heard that a lot of people use Comcast, but I have also heard some sketchy rumors about them. Also any good ranges in that area?

Good indoor pistol range near Willowbrook Mall off of FM 1960. It's called Shiloh.

Good to have another North side person.

Maybe we can start having meetings on the North Side since it's tough to get downtown or South of town.

Spectre Firearms is up here on FM249 and Spring Cypress and then of course there's me and Keith Norman for transfers and work on your AR's

I would recommend AT&T U-verse if it is available.  When I lived in Humble, my only option was Comcast.  Service was fine, I had no interruptions or anything of that nature.  I rarely had to deal with customer service (which I consider a good thing).  The only time I dealt with customer service was opening and closing the account, and they made it very easy.

The bone I had to pick with Comcast was that I paid $60 a month for about 6mbps downstream with a "Speedboost" of 18mbps.  The 18mbps only stays on for the first 10mb of the download or so.  It's lame.  I guess it's good to get a kickstart on streaming TV or movies, but...

With AT&T U-verse, I'm currently on the '$45 for 12mbps' tier and getting 14mbps actual.  $45 is the generic number for that tier, I believe I'm really paying $39 ($35 dollar for 6 months promotion + tax/charges I think).  Personally, I've had 100% up-time.  If there was an outage, it was either weather related or I wasn't home/using the internet to experience it.  YMMV, I live in an apartment built in 2009, so the internet infrastructure is probably laid out very well.  I do have a friend who lives in downtown who has nothing but complaints about her U-verse service.

I haven't looked back at Comcast since, and I'm not sure if they are offering a better tiered service to compete with AT&T or if they're still offering their "SpeedBoost" bs.

If high-speed isnt a concern, U-verse offers cheaper and lower tiers like 3mbps and 6mbps down for around $30/$35 as well.  Considering Comcast charged me $60 for their 6mbps actual, I'd go with AT&T regardless of your speed needs.  I'm actually considering moving to Spring after my current lease (to be closer to work) and whether or not the apartment has U-verse service plays a pretty big factor  for me.  I'm quite a power user (Xbox360, PC, netbook, smartphone, etc etc), but a budget conscious one

As far as ranges, there is a Carter's Country in Spring.  I'm not saying its good though :P

Welcome to TX.

I'll second Uverse if it's available. We have phone, TV, and internet through them and everything is fantastic. Had one hardware issue, but other than that everything has been great.

Thanks for the replies. Can't wait to get there.

If you don't mind, what do the complete U-verse packages (i.e phone, TV, internet) run per month? Do they have their own DVR or do you end up going out and getting a TiVO?

+1 on U verse.
Don't remember, but think it was like $150 a month with everything.
I moved from woodlands to Cypress, where they don't have U verse yet.
They gave us a contract with Direct TV, says they will pay the $150 termination fee with Direct TV for us when U verse is available in our neighborhood.
Thought that was a hell of a way to keep a happy customer.

I'm an internet only customer, but I did some searching on their site.

They have DVR service, and I believe 1 DVR is included with a TV package.  Each extra receiver (extra TVs) will be another $7 a month.  Extra receivers are non-DVR, however, you can record shows on 1 DVR and watch on any other receiver in the house.

Package prices vary, you can select how many channels you want, which data speed you want for internet and some other choice for phone as well.  I tested out a 200 channel with 12mbps and unlimited voice and it came out to about $162 a month.

You can try to build your own package as well below:

I run Comcast Blast.  It is the fastest home service that I know in my area (Missouri City).  I get a consistent 18Mbps down and can go as high as 25Mbps down.  It's also their most expensive plan as it's around 60 bucks a month.

UVerse costs up in Ft Worth

TV U450 $112 (premium channels & stuff in this too)
Internet Elite $35 (6 MBps)
Unlimited Phone $33

The only thing I can recommend is forget about the phone service.  If you can just use your cell phone.  If you have to have a phone at home sign up for Skype and/or if you can get a Google Voice number.  The service with Skype is pretty good and costs a fraction of what ATT wants.

Attention all:

Anticipate Red River crossing on 6/27 approx 14:45 Zulu. Spousal unit to be wearing this for proper identification at entrance. No cheese products, snow boots, or libtard governors on board. Keep your trail cams handy. It will be momentous.

ETA: Thanks for the tips. Set up for AT&T Uverse. Deregulated utilities was a bit fun to sort out.
