Any reports on the Larue 3 gun this weekend?
5/10/2010 6:58:04 AM EDT
[#1]
Lots of fun and a very difficult match.  Had a tough time finding my crosshairs through some of those ports which seemed to be at the worst possible heights.  Wasted a ton of time just trying to get a comfortable shooting position and scope problems didn't help.  Everything on me hurts and I'm covered in cuts and bruises, but at least I got 5th on the tunnel stage to show for it.  Lots of long range shooting, support side rifle, and awkward shooting positions really tested your rifle skills.  Many stages had a mixture of shot and slugs to keep track of.  Will start working on conditioning and the rest listed above for next year.  This match took some of the hardest things found at other matches and added 3x more of it so it definitely highlighted the weaknesses in my game.  The "Jungle Run" had me too tired at the end and had me take too long to make the long shots.

Range and facilities were incredible.  A lot of thanks to Steve and Fred for making that available to us and getting it ready for this match.  Spread out but I liked being able to drive to stages and allowed for a lot of long range rifle.  Everything seemed to be well set up and ran smooth.  I'm still not sure how so many people managed to miss the pepper poppers with the slugs yet nailed the little metal ones they were supposed to shoot with birdshot.  Thanks to Greg and Linda for running the match and of course Mark and everyone else at LaRue for providing the great prizes, BBQ, and everything else.  Also thanks to all the other match sponsors and RO's.

Some other threads over on the LaRue forum with match reports.

I found out after a stage you can bend a charging handle back straight if your careful to get your rifle back functioniing. I guess I FIRST I found out if your careless you can bend your charging handle and disable your rifle in the middle of a stage.

The receiver extension with the butstock removed makes a decent straight edge to help get that handle straight! Rest of the day consisted of me running to grab the rifle, then slowly and very deliberately charging it before continueing the stage. And I loved every second of it.

That's why I have one of these on my rifle.

Thankfully this match will have new management next year.  It really deserves better.

Its a top tier 3 Gun match, and the way it was run this year was just sad.  Some parts where fun, the rest was just terrible.

Umm yeah, elaborate please.

Other than stage 7 being too long, what was wrong?

What was wrong with the match?

I liked the fact that it was spread out and you could drive from stage to stage.

Stage 5:  It needed, as pointed on on the Enos forum, the benny hill theme playing from loud speakers as people ran back and forth from the table to the barricade to get their guns.

Is Greg Coker & Linda Chico not running it next year?

Linda had her shit together. Final results 15 minutes after last shot fired.

It's pretty much Greg's match.  He, with Mark L., picked it up 3 years ago when CavArms had to withdraw as sponsors.  After the first year, it went to a "tactical" theme, many of the stages based upon real life scenarios.

CavArms went pretty wild with some of the stages, with as many as 50 shotgun targets and 100+ pistol and rifle rds in a single stage.

As for running back and forth, TJ likes to torture people with that too.  First stage, 300 yard paper silhouette w/60 rds, 20 rds per magazine...the catch is/was that you have to run back down the berm twice to retrieve magazines #2 and then #3.

As for an AAR.....more garbage cans at each stage, or rather a garbage can at each stage instead of bags on the ground.  Medics/EMTS - instead of at a central point, with the stages so spread around maybe spread the medics around and make them identifiable, plus many of the participants are also medics, emts and paramedics(but this may end up being a personal liability problem).  Instead of just a hat, maybe supply the ROs/Scorers/Support with a unique colored shirt.  A defined/marked/mapped camping area, and an overnight parking area for ATVs, UTVs, carts and trailers.  Finally, transportation with a clearly defined and easy to use REVERSE for a certain match sponsor.

I'll be posting some of this in the Enos forum.  The operational problems of the match corrected themselves.  And we got out before 9pm on Sunday which sorta/kinda never happened at the previous matches, including the CavArms ones.

Well Kevin let us get one thing perfectly clear, That is that I own the range and you do not! Larue or no Larue  is for me to announce and not you. As far as being sad, if that is your opinion so be it. Fine with me. Like they say everyone has an opinion, but please elaborate and let me know what you did not like so that I can improve for next time Larue or no Larue.

I loved it, other than the dust and pollen conspiring to totally kick my booty for the entire weekend. I finished where I should have (128) combined with my speed and mistakes (like bending my charging handle). I can be decent but I am by no means what I'd call competitive when it comes to the likes of good 3 gunners. I enjoy the Larue shoots and use them to validate my gear and guns. I look forward to next years Larue shoot assumming its still in Texas.

As far as after thoughts, its almost completely covered on Enos forums. RO consistancy, written stage briefs, and load tables with trash cans on every stage, sums it up for me.

Thank you very much for a great match and facility mrt53, and thats before even mentioning the prize table.

mrt53,

How can we find out about future shoots? I had a blast and even though it's a 3 hr drive, one way, I'd love to shoot some more. Yes there were some hick ups, but who cares. I learned a lot and had a great time. If it was easy, and everything went perfect, what would you learn about yourself and your equipment? I plan on making it back as many times as possible. Thanks for a great place and a great shoot.

SGDM, kudos for running a great match, and sorry to hear about the aftermath and fallout. Let me know if I can be of any legal assistance to you in the coming weeks. Thanks for letting us hit the range this afternoon before the rain, and we hope to see you in Phoenix next week.

Greg replied on Enos: "No aftermath or fallout! Just me and the Rangemaster, Rick Porter, a long time friend having a discussion between 2 x type A's."

Don't sweat it. It's a non-issue.

mrt53,

Let me be perfectly clear: I have no issue with the range facilities or location.  In fact, you have the nicest restroom of any 3 gun venue...anywhere.  The rest of the place is Top Notch as well and its clearly still in its embryonic stage.  Well done to you, sir.

I have no intention to, in detail, publicly trash someone's hard work. A lot of hard work by good people, who have earned my respect, was put into this match.  In my opinion, much of that was misdirected.  Linda, as always was flawless, and the operation of stats reflected that.  I have shot and/or RO'd at nearly every major 3 Gun match in the country over the last 10 years, not to mention USPSA Level Two's,  Three's and Nationals;  I run a monthly match and am responsible for stages, scoring, RO's, money and above all, safety.  And all of that experience, and exposure to the way its done elsewhere by the other Match Icons of this sport, from stage design/proofing, to marketing, to sponsor representation, to RO qualification/training/selection, to pre-match information dissemination, to stage briefings, to match booklets, to scheduling lunch for the RO's...tells me that this could be done differently to maintain the LaRue brand as the premier Wow Factor 3 Gun in the country.

As it has been, and should be.

I drove in from Austin as a spectator and was amazed by the range and the facilities. I was looking for a friend and several people stopped their lunch and helped me find him.
Great bunch of guys, great facilities, great sponser and really impressive showing of talent.
I was amazed at the prize table/sponser list. Some serious homework done there.
Congrats guys.

Well if it's at Cawthon next spring, I'm going. I talked to one participant, and he absolutely raved about how great it was. Not that he is a world class shooter, but the fact that he got to test all of his gear and found out some things that he needed to know. What worked, what didn't work, etc.

He called it a great learning experience and a hell of a lot of fun.
