I have just got a new job in Austin,  not sure of the move date yet but within the next few months.  I recently acquired my CCW here in Arkansas.  I was wondering what steps i would need to take to change it over to a Texas CCW.  I know this must come up often, if you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

As you probably know TX has reciprocity with AR, so your CCW is valid here.  If you want a TX CHL you will need to do two things:

1.  Get a TX ID or DL
2.  Go through the entire TX CHL procedure for a new CHL holder, classroom, BG check, range session, etc

But while you are getting your TX CHL your AR CHL will cover you.

(edited to fix AR/AK cause I'm an english noob)

Ok Well I hate to have a geography Lesson but AK is Alaska and AR is Arkansas.....Austin is a great town with lots to do and see. Great food, mexican, BBQ and others...we have the lakes and downtown/6th street if you desire a night life....I hope you are not a razorback fan cause we bleed burnt Orange and love our Longhorns.

Do you know what part of town you are looking to move to?

I have lived here for 20+ yrs in Northwest Austin and now Cedar Park/Leander.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

welcome to Austin, if you have any other questions for us, some of can probably answer them.....like.....what part of town to live in and what part(s) of town to avoid.  also a few of us are CHL instructors.

well i grew up in east Texas. (Hunt county), until the Air Force moved me here to AR.  I absolutely hate the razorbacks. have in-laws that are alums.  however, Austin will be rough for me as a college fan as I follow the Aggies.
That sucks that i will have to restart the entire chl process over again. Can I have a TX DL, and maintain TX residency with my AR CCW? At least until it is about to expire?

I will be working at the AT&T Lab near the Arboretum.  My wife is preg with our second child and due in April so the move will be around then.  I have been looking in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Manor....etc basically as long as i can get to work in under 30 min it would work.

One vote for cedar park. Great little town and not far from the Arbor at all.

Williamson county is definately more right minded than Travis County/Austin. The cops here are more hard asses than APD, which as a kid bothered me. Now as a parent/homeowner, it suits me just fine.

i would imagine,  the job is a 2 year contract position, so we will be looking to rent.  we own a house here in AR that we will be keeping as well.  My biggest worry right now is about my dogs.  2 black labs that aren't very friendly towards yards.  wonderful dogs other than that.

Welcome back to Texas.

Congratulations on the new child.

Sorry to hear about your aggie affliction.

You shouldn't have trouble taking your truck to most places.  However, there are a few holier than thou greenies (I'm guessing mostly from Oregon & California or they want to convert Austin to OR/CA) that live in the more central downtown part of Austin that think everyone should walk or ride a bike.  Don't get me wrong....I like to ride bikes........off-road.  I just don't take kindly to vehicular discrimination as I also have a lifted truck.

i think i have narrowed things down to cedar park, round rock, pfluegerville(?), manor, or leander.  if anyone knows of any good rental places coming open between $1000 to $1500 per month let me know.  As far as the truck goes, i hope i can get it into the parking garage in the arboretum right next to the building.

I am guessing there are plenty of good places to go shoot right?

Manor is going to be a drive unless you are planning on using the toll roads. Upside is you will be close to the Austin Rifle Club though.

P-ville you are close to Red's indoor range north.

Leander/Ceder Park you are close to Eagle Peak shooting range.

Supposedly the light rail will open later this year, 2 years late.

i wouldn't mind toll roads. as long as there was toll tag.  which of these places is the best as far as traffic?

NOT Manor.  it is an extension of East Austin.
