Alright what is the word on the Saxet show???

Have they found a new home or those of us in Centex just screwed?

I haven't heard any updates on this since the one on it being canceled.

Of course I don't visit this joint as often as I used to.

Not going to new show since they banned FTF sales.

just got back.  completely sucked.  20 vendors tops, 50%+ were selling gewgaws, not guns.  2 ammo guys were there, there wasn't a pallet of ammo between them.  $5/head, good for 2 days.  the guys that were there weren't even able to come up with a standard QD sling for an AR.  coins, t-shirts with stuff on 'em no one's interested in, a whole table full of shed antlers for $20-30 ea. (?) couple of tables of tactical stuff, the obligatory AR guy who has everything imaginable except the part you need, 2-4 tables of overpriced costume jewelry, a little silver here and there.

my 2 cents?  don't bother.  mcdonalds will give you a full meal for less than i spent getting into that show, and all i got there was an education.

Best idea for us in the Austin area is to do the drive to San Antonio for the SAXET show at the new venue, 410 and Marbach.  Free parking, $5, lots of vendors.  Next one is 6,7 Feb.  I will be going.

Any pics of the signs forbidding private sales there?

I went to the "show" today and it was quite honestly the most pathetic grouping of tables that I have ever seen, anywhere.   There were perhaps five rows of tables and maybe half of them were offering knives and other non-firearm trinkets.  The folks I spoke with were quite up front that the current location seems to be a dying gun show venue.  One vendor claimed to have been victim of a BATFE sting on Saturday, resulting in a firearm being confiscated and an investigation opened.  There were a couple of familiar faces, but very few were the "quality" vendors from the Saxet show ( mostly the guys with the cases full of every kind of beat off-brand magazine with a factory price on them or piles of CAA or Tapco parts hawking them as "the go to gear for the guys in teh sandbox" ).

I don't recall seeing any signs displayed prohibiting FTF sales, nor was I verbally enjoined.

This show made me feel sad and nostalgic and I kind of wish I hadn't gone.

Went on Saturday because a friend wanted to go.  Being familiar with the Saxet show, I was stunned at how few vendors were there.

At the entrance, where one paid one's 5 buck entry fee, they did have flyers mentioning the new prohibition by Austin on FTF sales without going through an FFL.  The flyer stated that this prohibition applied to sales inside the show and in the parking lot.  Didn't say anything about the parking lot of Chuy's across the street, though.  They also had a petition on the table with a boatload of signatures.  This was the first I'd ever heard of a ban on FTF sales, and needless to say, I was shocked.  When did this go into effect?

It hasn't gone into effect, It appears the APD decided to make their own laws concerning FTF sales at that gun show.

The building is owned by HEB. APD threaten HEB with a nuisance law suit if HEB did not require the promoter to ban FTF sales. ATF asked politely(under penalty of harrassment) for people to 'comply' with only ffl transfer during the sale.

Just JBT trying to close the gun show loop hole.

After all a druggy is going to spend 400 bucks to buy a gun to go steal money for his next hit.

This was my response from the promoter, a real eye opener, if you have the time you need to listen, if you don't you need to make the time.

Thank you for your response. If you have the time and want to know what really happened, please go to:

That the same gun show that was just at the Crocket Center this weekend.  They had been at that old Target building until SAXET stopped having shows at the Crocket.  They took over there hoping to drum up more business, but after this weekends situation with the APD/BATF, maybe they are hoping to be less restricted back over at the Target?  I'm sure APD/BATF will be visting that property owner soon so who knows.

The promoter's web site still lists the north austin location for feb but maybe they will go back to the old target building. At least HEB can't tell them what to do.

Yeah, it's all HEB's fault, not the APD or BATF or the promotor who gave in. Last time I checked HEB is not in the buisiness of selling guns or ammo or standing up for gun owners rights, they are a grocery company.  Some HEB exec gets APD and BATF visiting them with all kind of BS info, they are going to do what they suggest.  What do you think is going to happen when APD visits the owner of the old Target buliding?

I wonder if HEB/APD/ATF leaned on Saxet and that's why they pulled out?

Possible it was a factor, but the main problem they had was the building management who weren't receptive to fixing issues like the roof leaking like a sieve and the AC not working properly.

How does HEB have anything to do with the Crocket Center? When it used to be a Sam's Club, which is part of Wal-mart.

They supposedly bought the land on speculation with the posibity of putting a store there. They are still holding the land for leasing.

For those interested KVUE had a peice about the violation of the onstitution.....ok they tried to make is sem trivial.

The video has a APD dectective addressing the contriversy. He says'We suggested to the owner of the property(heb) that there should only be FFL sales at the showand that this is a civil matter.'

Now when an official of law enforcement makes a suggestion and the way this officer made it. I hear the sopronoes theme. The only difference between the APD and the mob is one wears a badge(not all APD personel are like this but the higher ups are giving the street cop a bad name).

"Hey bud, nice place you have here. To bad if it was to catch fire or be broken into but for a little considerartion that can be avoided"(said in a bad brooklyn accent.

This was published online by the Austin American Statesman yesterday :

APD outlines its role in targeting illegal activity at gun shows
from The Blotter

FROM THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Federal Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE) agents worked cooperatively with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agents last year in a long-term operation targeting illegal gun trafficking that was stemming from local gun shows. Austin Police Department Firearm Review Unit detectives assisted in the Austin portion of the operation. They observed and participated in multiple arrests of prohibited persons (primarily convicted felons and illegal immigrants) that obtained firearms illegally at a local gun show.
Federal convictions were obtained in a majority of the cases.

Virtually all of these sales to prohibited persons were made by unlicensed dealers or private citizens, both inside the gun show and in the parking lot of the gun show. While the sale of firearms between private citizens is not illegal, the anonymity of these sales in or around the event created an easy avenue for illegal immigrants or convicted felons to acquire firearms. Because of this recurring activity at a single location, the Firearm Review Unit referred the case over to the APD Nuisance Abatement Unit.

Due to the history of criminal activity at the gun show, the Nuisance Abatement Unit scheduled a meeting between the property lessee (HEB Grocery), the building sub-lessee (Andrew Perkel a.k.a Austin Market Place), the event promoter (Darwin Boedecker-Texas Gun Shows) and ATF. During this meeting, APD along with ATF offered to all parties, recommendations to curb the illegal activity that had been documented in the past. At the conclusion of the meeting the lessee agreed that the recommendations should be followed and instructed their sub-lessee to follow the recommendations. The sub-lessee then informed the event promoter to implement the recommendations at the next show. The recommendations that the lessee directed the sub-lessee and the event promoter to follow were:

  1. Only licensed gun dealers are allowed to sell firearms at the gun shows
  2. The promoter will provide on-site security to prevent parking lot gun sales
  3. The promoter will define a process for people other than licensed dealers that show up with a gun that they want to sell

There was an understanding that the January 16-17, 2010 gun show would follow these recommendations.
