I am fairly new to Texas, and very happy to be in a land where the shooting sports are so organized.
My goal is long range precision shooting, cept I got side tracked with AR's. So, now my goal is long range precision shooting with an AR, as opposed to a bolt gun. After finally getting the parts I needed to build my first (and second) AR, getting the reloading components, and developing a load, I am ready to extend my range past 200 yds. I am member of Austin Rifle Club, and they dont have the 300 yd range anymore. I have found Tiger Valley and Rifles Only on the net. They have classes which I would like to do, but I would like to go to a range and work up my dope first. Seems Tiger Valley has a day where one can shoot their 1000yd range, but i dont see it on their calender. Is there anywhere within 2 or 3 hrs of Austin, that has a daily range that has a 300-500 range? I know about Eagle Peak. Although I had a bad experience there, which led to me immediately joing ARC - which has been great, I will go out there to shoot their 300 yd range. |

The ARC 350 yard range is not usable due to the new action ranges. I'm not sure what the plans and schedule is to move the 350 yard bench and get it operational again. It may turn into a 375 or 400 yard bench. You might want to email the club officers and see what the plans are. Gringop |

I am planning on going to the next the ARC member meeting to ask. The action ranges are a great addition to the club, and a net gain, but I hope they figure out how to set up a 300 yd range.
I will check out the place in Houston, and is my best bet. Canada is little far to drive. Hoping enough interest in Tiger Valley's range day comes about. |

Well I would suggest the Rod and Gun Club at Ft. Bliss but its abou 5-6 hours away. A great outdoor range. Has a clubhouse that serves food and drink and many ranges from a 25 yard pistol only range to range 5 that is a 1,000 yard range. No 50's allowed though.
The range is open to civilians @ a decent rate. Something like 10 or 11 bucks for a days usage. |

a 1,000 yard range. No 50's allowed though. It is nice that they allow civilians to use the facility... but a 1000 yard range that doesn't allow 50s is kind of like an autobahn with a 55mph speed limit. But it's their place, their rules. Problem is there are military training areas down range of the range. Just last year many of the ranges were closed because someone was using and out of date map. Rounds were fallling out of the sky everywhere. Once everything was cleared up they reopened the rifle ranges. We also lost one range due to a new highway that was routed right next to the range. We also have to shout cease fire when there are low flying aircraft crossing the range. Yet it's still one heck of a range. So you fellows looking for a few days of shooting and enjoying yourself should consider a trip out this way. Heck you can even reserve a range for your use. Not sure of the cost but it's done all of the time by IPSC,IDPA,small bore, large bore, black powder, cowboy and the other groups. Plus the weather can't be beat. |
