I have a small range now but want to expand it and then hold an Arfcom shoot. The power company gave me 100 telephone poles. Does anyone have any ideas (do's & dont's) of a range? Maybe a  good website?  I'm located in Tioga, Texas, and I plan on starting this project sometime after November and hope to hold a spring shoot at our ranch.

The NRA has information on this kind of thing.

You are gonna need some Ar500 plate, and lots of it to make dynamic targets.  I love shooting steel, MUCH more than paper, and find most of my guests do too.

Can you extend your range out to 500 yards or so?  Nice thing for large shoots is also a roof for shade, and  soft area to lay prone one.

Didn't you hold a shoot there last year?

Yeah, I had a shoot hear last year but realized I needed to make it bigger. I am going to rent a backhoe and slice the front edge off the dam and use the telephone polls somehow. I have some ideas but need to wait until my farming season is over to get started.

Let me know if you need help, you can probably organize a range build party with the members here.

Clark's BBQ FTW!

We were trapping hogs in the cemetery in Tioga last year.

I could probably help out some when you get started.

Thanks, I guess I can go to the  NRA website for the manual. I scanned it a little and didn't see it but will check again. If anyone wants to help I will let you know what day I might need the most hands and post it. If anyone wants to shoot any time before that let me know. I didn't know there were any hogs around here lots of coyotes but no hogs. We also have 1200 acres near Canton,TX and there is everything under the sun there if anyone wants to go sometime. Sorry if my grammar and punctuation suck but that wasn't a requirement to be a farmer.

I'm guessing this is it here: http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/sourcebook.asp

Here is the link, you can order it for $60.00 http://materials.nrahq.org/go/product.aspx?productid=AR%2014840

Would be nice if someone here had one you could borrow...

Depending upon my schedule in Nov. or when ever it works out I would be willing to help out. I'm in the Dallas area. I've had a crazy schedule as of late so it would be very dependent upon when the project ended up being scheduled.

As far as range ideas. Reactive steel is great, esp. if you have some rifle rated plates. I saw Wildners or someone like that had some on sale.
You can keep some areas pretty woody and descetely place some steel plates for shooters to engage, This can be done with rifle or pistol plates as long as minimal safe distances are maintained and can be simply hung from a tree.
Also the telephone poles, in addition to other uses are good for making really sturdy supports for structures if you wanted to make some type of shoot house, now or later. If you want to have a combat shooting type area some old junk cars make great cover and some folks would be welcome for someone to haul them off their property.
Depending upon your budget, resources and materials there are lots of options. It also depends upon the type of range you want. Do you want a static line known distance facility or some type of combat range, or a mix of the two.

Hell I'm open to any ideas and some of those sound pretty good. I would like to make it to where you can get some real practice and keep it fun at the same time. Money is not a real problem as long as it doesn't get to crazy. Just want to make it good enough for people to want to use it.

You can buy a CD with all the same docs in PDF format for $20 from the NRA. I have it.
It has lots of diagrams of different ranges. It does not have a step by step guide to building an NRA approved range.
It's worth $20 but not worth $60, IMHO.

Yeah, we got a call because the hogs were rootin up the graves, knocking over headstones and eating all of the flowers. It's the cemetery west of 377 by the quarter horse place. We trapped them for about 2-3 months out there until they got the new fence done to keep them out.

Was kind of weird setting up hog traps in a cemetery.
