I bit the bullet and did a Form 1 SBR on my AR and now I need a local guy to engrave the lower. Anyone know a decent shop in or around Austin to get this done at a reasonable price?
Thanks. |

If you haven't already I'd give the guys over there at GDS a call. If they can't do it I'd bet they know who can. |

when you find out, please post as I'd like to know too.
I got lazy on mine and wound up doing the engraving myself. not all bad, but wouldnt want to do it on a high dollar lower or somewhere readilly visable (like side of magwell). you might try talking to some of the bigger jewelry shops (benolds, etc) and see who does their custom work and talk to them? buddy of mine is playing with a new laser engraver he bought. I mentioned a little side biz for AR stuff if he could get it worked out (depth, etc) and said he'd think about it. I sure dont want to be his test subject..... |

Hell, I'll be his test subject!!!!!!! If its a regular laser we will just have to make multiple passes to get the right depth. If he's game let me know! he said he was going to mess with a couple of his guns first to see what's what I'll mention it to him though and see what he's got done |

You can't use a laser engraver on NFA weapons. The engraving has to be at least .003 deep.. correct. which is one of the things my buddy is working on, such as doing several passes, etc. I'm not the laser guy.....just hoping it turns out good so there's someone in Austin we can go to. |

I sent two lowers out on Monday and had them back by Thursday. Wrong I just had these guys do two lowers for me and they look great! Quoted:

Keep in mind when doing lazer engraving that there is a depth requirement. Most trophy shops use a Co2 laser that will not deep engrave an aluminum receiver, for SBR engraving we use a 100 watt YAG laser that is specifically designed for deep engraving. We engrave to about .006" deep. Hi,
Thanks Keith- we do have our 07/02 FFL and can accept firearms for engraving. I posted some info in the Class 3 forum with regards to laser engraving- hope it clears up some of the confusion about the types of laser marking and engraving. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=22&t=270270&page=1 Karma |
