A couple weeks ago, my SO and I were at the range making little holes in paper. A mini van pulled up and out popped a family of 4. Mom, Dad and a couple rug rats. They were all sporting hunting rifles. A couple (of the rifles) where on the side of healthy calibers. They set up a couple bays over from where we were shooting. After my bride finished sending a string of rounds down range from the AR15, the mother of the family commented, "That sure is loud. What kind of a gun is that?"

To which my SO replied matter of factually, "It's an AR15."

That's when Soccer Mom asked, "It looks like an army gun, what do you hunt with that?"

My SO was stunned into a rare moment of silence so I stepped in to help her out.

"Terrorists!"

So, I know that people say the darnedest things. What crazy things have people said to you at the range?

Checking in with the cashier at a range with a history of being anti-mil-arms, and obtaining my lane assignment....
Mr Range asks "What'll ya be firing today?"
Me: M1 Garand
Him: Is that an AK Variant?
Me: no thirty-ought-six
Him: OK, have a great time out there.

From a range safety officer (who is also a relative of the range owner):

"Well, you ain't gonna hit a moving target unless you have machine gun. If that guy is moving you're just gonna be wasting ammo shootin' at 'em!"

Was sighting in a bolt rifle and the gentlemen next too me was shooting a VERY nice AR.  It was a Colt with a Daniel Defense rail, ACOG, Surefire Light, SOPMOD stock, etc.  I was apparently staring at the ACOG a little too long and he asked if I would like to shoot it.

Now, I'm completely comfortable with the AR system, but considering I'm holding maybe $2-3K worth of this guys money, I was being gentle with some of the functions.  Carefully inserting the mag, pushing it firmly in instead of smacking the hell out of the bottom of the mag.  Gently pulling back on the charging handle vs. cranking back and letting fly.

He stopped me halfway thru and said, "It's a tool, not an egg."

That got a good chuckle out of me.  Glad to see others with the same mindset.

I was out testing some handloads one day with my custom 7mm-08 R700Ti.  Using different POA's on the target, I had printed four 5-shot groups at about 0.7-0.8 MOA each, and was letting my rifle cool down.

Two guys show up at the bench next to me, and ask what I am shooting.  I told them 7mm-08; it's my hunting rifle.  Their response was, "you really need to get a 7 mag."

I noticed them glassing my target, and one of them says to the other, "man, that guy is all over the target!"

When I finished my cigarette, I took a peek at their target; they had a most excellent 7-shot group of about 6+ MOA.  I thought to myself, yep, I really do need a 7 mag.

At the range and a cease fire was called for target changes.. Range officer and I were engaged in a conversation.. He asked me if I was really a Marine.. after verifying that I was he said, " Could you watch the firing line for me so I can help change targets?" I obliged!!!! (Also had to tell someone to back off the firing line, as they were down range changing targets!!!)

At a range down in Florida, a group of 5-6 of us Arfcommers showed up for an impromptu shoot after work one day, and we set up between 4-5 tables to the right of two Fudd's sighting in a new Blackpowder rifle.  When they see what we're taking out of our cases, they hurredly pack up their stuff, and stop to watch us before they left.  A few rounds were sent down range waiting on a cold range.  When a cold range was called a few of my buddy's went down to hang paper, and the Fudds came over to look at the arsenals laid before them, and one says to the other "It these freaks with these machine guns that give our sport a bad name."  I asked them which machine gun he was referring to, and he pointed to the assembled joy before us on the 5 benches.  I informed him that not one of the rifles displayed was an automatic weapon, and that at this particular range, there were more of "us" than "them", and that we ALL enjoyed the shooting sport, and should stick together.  They hemmed and hawed, but stuck around till the range went hot again.  I offered my 16" AR with a EOtech 512 optic to them to try, and they both fired 10-15 rounds downrange, and grinned from ear to ear while doing it.  I saw both of them a few weeks later at the same range, and whaddyya know?  They BOTH have new AR's.  God I love the BRD.

RO told me I wasn't allowed to shoot Title II firearms (I was shooting a Warlock) since the range lacked the "special" federal permit.  Old fart at counter even went into more detail about federal restrictions for ranges.   I refuse to argue with stupid so I walked out and have never graced them again.  Their range, their rules...

I was tempted to send the Q&A section on the BATFE NFA page debunking this but these guys still would argue.  It amazes me how many people in the firearm business know little about guns.

theres a big f-ng surprise, i was there once with my daughter and her match AR, im in the leupold shooting, someone is on my right going thru our stuff, thought it was my daughter,i look up and its the RO pulling our ammo out and looking at it!, (they dont like fmj) , without even asking, the guy is going thru our stuff, he almost seemed dissapointed when he saw it was ballistic tips and not fmj, then he walked away. i kept my cool, we zeroed,(thier range is not 100 yds btw), and left. as you said, it was easy to tell they were morons, and like you i dont argue with fools, so i didnt say anything to the guy in the head shed, we just left, & we'll never go back. just have to plan ahead to have more time and make the drive to tac-pro.

Thats interesting, I've never been hassled by the RO's there. Most of them are young and usually very curtious. I have been told before not to let my fiance or mom shoot on the police officers range with me before, but thats about it.

Normally they don't give any issue, but I think on that day it might have been because it was a saturday, they were busy, and had a few "urban youths" shooting their SKS/AK's down on the 25 yard range making a bunch of noise and such. Thankfully they weren't muzzle sweeping the rest of the benches, just the empty side.

Come to our range. Haltom City Rifle and Pistol Club It is a private range, but matches are open to the public. The website has membership information. Only one of you would have to join. The other, and any other immediate family members would automatically become associate members with full membership privaleges aside from voting.
Our range goes to 200 yards, we are EBR friendle and a lot of us have cans.
There is no full-auto, and rifles are restricted to loading 5 rounds. This really bothers some people but we are still open when many other in-town ranges have been closed.
We are in Haltom City at Hwy.121 and Minnis Dr. next to the old landfill.

Get in touch with me via email or PM if you want more info.

I was at an indoor range in Houston firing my new 1911.  I noticed that the front site post was coming out and asked the owner if he had a small brass hammer or punch so I could tap it back.

He said no.  When I persisted that it wouldn't take much he said he didn't want any of that radioactive tritium stuff in his shop.

I promptly left and never went back.

LOL.  No other side.  In Humble if I remember correctly.  I was home on leave and wanted to shoot my new pistol.  After he told me that, I left.

Found Carter's Country in Humble, had them tap it back in for me while laughing at said moron, then proceed to shoot 200 rounds downrange no problem.

Sunday before last i was suprised to see 10 or 12 guys and a couple of ladies shooting black rifles when i walked in.

We can shoot FMJ's also which helps keep the cost down with the price of ammo being so high these days.

Something else worth mentioning, a couple of weeks ago we had some new wooden screens with mesh on them show up to help with keeping the brass from hitting the guy next to you on the bench. I had to smile at that because i didn't have to crawl all over the line picking up my brass anymore, it was all right their on the ground by my setup.

After shooting at most of the ranges around the metroplex and putting up with stupid people that have no clue, it's the only place i go anymore to shoot.

The 5 round rule was put in place years ago. Apparently there were some instances of people shooting a few rounds then laying a loaded rifle down during to hang a target. A few SKS rifles also experienced slamfires.
At that time there were a few board members who didn't like semi-auto rifles. After the rule was put in place our insurance said it was a good idea so it has stuck. It is really annoying when shooting a Garand too.
We are trying to get an exception made for the Garands but it is hard to do.
The rules we have were suggested by the NRA or by our insurance carrier. The range set-up and rules have kept us open in the face of strong opposition. The city of Ft.Worth wants us shut down, and it really pisses them off that they can't since we are in Haltom City on the city limits. If we have rounds get out of the range however we could be sued and forced to close. Being in town and convenient makes us work hard to stay open.

As for it being EBR friendly we don't hassle AR shooters like some ranges do. In fact the RO will probably walk over to see what you have, and if it's better than his.
We also do not hassle people using suppressers or anything else that's legal.

Come out and visit us. We have concrete benches with a section that can be removed for prone shooting, covered shooting stations, about 14 25-50 yard ststions, about the same 100 yard stations and either 4 or 6 200 yard stations.
We have a lot of matches, some informal and some sanctioned. All are open to the public. We also have open to the public sight-in-days held on the last 2 weekends in October.

Jim
