i am looking to get my CHL and someone told me once that in Texas you have privliges for being MIL. like i dont have to take the class or something like that. were they in the ballpark at all when they told me this or what? thanks

Not that I know of, I think you can get it at 18 if you are military though.

yea i knew about the 18 thing, i didnt think he was correct because i am sure that even thought i am trained in the use of Deadly Force and all that the state would still requre the class to instruct on the specific state laws.

you will have to take the class and you can get it at 18.... and you get a big discount

I think the portion you can get waived is the shooting test part if you can show prior qualifications.

Texas Government Code
§ 411.1881. Exemption from Instruction for Certain Persons.


(a)  Notwithstanding any other provision of this subchapter, a person may not be required to complete the range instruction portion of a handgun proficiency course to obtain or renew a concealed handgun license issued under this subchapter if the person:  
(1) is currently serving in or is honorably discharged from:  
(A) the army, navy, air force, coast guard, or marine corps of the United States or an auxiliary service or reserve unit of one of those branches of the armed forces; or  
(B) the state military forces, as defined by Section 431.001; and  
(2) has, within the five years preceding the date of the person's application for an original or renewed license, as applicable, completed a course of training in handgun proficiency or familiarization as part of the person's service with the armed forces or state military forces.   (b)  The director by rule shall adopt a procedure by which a license holder who is exempt under Subsection (a) from the range instruction portion of the handgun proficiency requirement may submit a form demonstrating the license holder's qualification for an exemption under that subsection. The form must provide sufficient information to allow the department to verify whether the license holder qualifies for the exemption

The biggest priveledge of being mil is that you can get it at 18,    then the discounts,  or if your "old"   the biggest priviledge is the discount.

Where does it say you can get a CHL at 18 if you are in the military.  Then where does federal law say you can own a handgun at 18?

Federal law just states that you cannot buy a handgun from a FFL (dealer) unless you are 21.  You can buy and own handguns at 18 (and in some cases below that).

It has been posted here numerous times.  The Texas Government Code, Chapter 411, Subchapter H, 411.172 (g).

Federal law does not allow action, it proscribes acts.  Federal Law does not proscribe possession or ownership of handguns at age 18.

basically you still have to take and pay for the course, but you don't have to pay TX $140.00...NICE perk indeed...

oh i believe you, thats what i ment. i figured that there was A LOT of information that needs to be covered to recieve it. thanks for all the info.
