I am interested but completely clueless as to how the process goes.

A) Take course at local range-80$
B) Submit paperwork from DPS
C) Send back paperwork from DPS with 200$ bribe
D) Hope it works?

Thanks all,

Took the course at Alpine today. It was long and somewhat boring. From 7-12 classroom instruction, then one hour for lunch, then from 1-4 classroom instruction/paperwork/tests then from 415-500 Range time

There were 10 people in the class

5 Glocks-1 G17 (mine) 2x G22 and 2x G23
2 Berretta 92FS
1 1911
2 S&W Smegmas (one kept jamming repeatedly and the guy using it had no clue how to clear it)

I am getting my stuff notarized Monday and will have it sent off by the end of the week.

So in short, class still sucks and shooting is still fun I was chastised by my instructor for taking too much time between shots instead of "capping the thug".

Alpine gun range offers the class for 125$. They offer ammo as part of the deal, not sure if it's reloaded or new ammo. Depending on what it is, I will take my own.

Initial applications are $140, renewals are $70.

My instructor charges $115 for the initlal class, $75 for renewals.  That covers the classroom hours, shooting test, fingerprints, photographs, notary, range fees, and lunch.

I just finished this process myself.  DPS received my completed application packet on 12 July, and I received my CHL in the mail on 17 Aug.

By the way, I recommend doing the online application on the DPS website.  This way you'll get your pin and state payment done upfront, and DPS will send you pre-printed forms to use in class.  No biggie if you've already done the conventional deal.

I'm just looking into take my first CHL class in the Austin area.  I'm shocked to see that DPS wants $140 on top of the $125 class.

DPS does not charge for the class.  You are paying the private instructor.

DPS has to send $25 to the FBI for that FP check, then run their own.  They also have to inquire with several state agencies to see if you are delinquent on your child support, state taxes, or student loans.  Then they send a trooper to every county you have lived and worked to do the criminal records checks.  If there are any unusual circumstances those must be investigated.

Then the license has to be made, and the CHL bureau has to be funded.  It is a bargain for $140, but there is also a reduced fee for indigent applicants if you meet that requirement.
