I thought I'd share this with you guys...

I wrote my representative in the House of Reps, 10th District Texas, regarding HR1022.  I voiced my opinion about the ban and stated that our rights are being deteriorated and gun owners/2nd amendment defenders will be out in force at all future polls.  We will not tolerate our rights being taken away from us.

Here is Michael T. McCaul's reply to me:

Dear Mr. TxGunner,

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns with the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Atc of 2007, H.R. 1022.  I appreciate having the benefit of your views.

Like you, I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.  I believe that law abiding Americans should be allowed to protect themselves.  The right to bear arms and self defense are fundamental rights that must be protected.  Furthermore, it is understood that the greatest deterrent to violent crime is a criminal's fear that his intended victim might be armed.

The Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007, H.R. 1022, has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further review.  Although I do not sit on this committee, I will pass your concerns to my colleagues who do.  In addition, rest assured that I will keep your views in mind should this matter come before me on the floor of the US House of Representatives for vote.

Also, be assured that I support legislation that does not infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights.  I will keep your views in mind should additional legislation come before me on the the floor of the US House of Representatives or in committee for a vote.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me.  If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,

Michael T. McCaul
Member of Congress

Has anyone else received letters back from their representatives?

Also, what the hell is the Law Enforcement Proctection Act part of the bill?

Kind of an awkward sentence.

I think the "law enforcement protection" act is the PC name for this act.  I think it makes the sheeple feel like their kittens will be safer or something...

Thank you for contacting me about federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

It is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals. Rather, we must respect the rights of law-abiding citizens and focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes. I believe that strictly enforcing the law and meting out longer sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes will reduce crime much more effectively than gun or equipment bans.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to uphold our Second Amendment rights. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

Thank you for contacting me in regards to my position on the Second Amendment. I appreciate your participation in the legislative process and enjoy hearing from constituents.

As a gun owner and lifetime member of the NRA, I support the 2nd Amendment and every individual's right to keep and bear arms. I will always vote to protect our 2nd Amendment rights.

I cosponsored several pieces of legislation in the 109 th Congress that aimed at protecting our 2 nd Amendment rights. H.R. 47, the Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2005, would ensure the Constitutional right of all law abiding Americans to own a gun and use it in defense of self, family, and home and H.R. 1288, the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act, would restore Second Amendment rights in the District of Columbia.

Since 1998, dozens of municipalities and cities have filed suits against America 's firearm industry, alleging that it is responsible for the unforeseen acts of criminals. Thirty-three states, including Texas , have passed legislation to prohibit cities and anti-gun trial lawyers from bringing these predatory lawsuits to court aimed at bankrupting U.S. firearms and ammunition manufacturers.

To help the effort, I have cosponsored H.R. 800, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which would prohibit lawsuits against the American firearm industry resulting from the criminal or unlawful misuses of a qualified product by a person or a third party. The President has signed H.R. 800 into law. I will continue to work to get these and other important pieces of legislation passed through Congress and signed into law by President Bush.

I also voted in favor a H.R. 5013, the Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006. This bill prohibits the confiscation of firearms during an emergency or major disaster. Following Hurricane Katrina the New Orleans government confiscated firearms from homeowners in the disaster area. This bill will prevent local governments from denying the right of personal protection during an emergency.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views with me. Your opinions are important to me, so please write, call or email me with any concerns you may have in the future.
