I'm one of the lucky people that will always, not quite often, not most of the time, ALWAYS get delayed.  The delay is typically until late morning the next business day, it has been as short as 10 minutes or as long as 2 full business days.

The first stripped lower I bought was 5 years ago from Robbie, it was a show at Will Rogers.  I filled out the 4473 and Robbie said that I might be delayed because I had a common name, it was delayed....he ended up calling me about 45 minutes later while I was still at the show.

The reasons I have been told:

I have a common name.(I've been told this most often)

One of my parents might be a naturalized citizen.

If you had a security clearance in the military.

You had a traffic ticket in the last 1/3/5/7/10 years.

Your physical characteristics might match someone in the database.

You just changed the address or renewed your driver's license recently.

Someone in your unit(military) might be under criminal investigation.

Former military are kept in a separate database.

There are a couple of others that i cannot remember offhand.  Do any of the reasons I've been given actually have anything to do with the background check?

All the operators do is run a NCIC check. Its the same one LEOs run.  It is based on a soundex.  If the get a possible, it goes to an examiner who has the time to review it further.

If you show the FFL a Texas CHL there should not be any background check done, because the TX CHL is accepted as proof you are a qualified person.

Are you not showing your CHL when you buy?

Got one.

TxInv, thanks

Justin,  I have a Texas CHL.  I do use it when I do a firearms purchase.  Before I got it, late 2002, any pruchase that I attempted would be delayed.

If your name is John Smith, Thomas Murphy, Jim reeves, doug dillon...etc...it does sometimes cause a delay....

Nothing you can do about it.
