| I will be taking a CHL class this week and was wondering how long it is taking to get the license. Any idea on how long it takes from submission to receiving your CHL? Thanks in advance for any and all input. |
DPS is required under the law to either issue the license within 60 days or notify of a denial. There are a few allowances for taking longer. The reality is DPS is generally taking longer than 60 days, 90 + in some cases. |
| I mailed mine off July 11 and received it about 45 days later. I emailed them about a month and a half after I mailed it to ask for an update, and they told me they were mailing it the next morning. My theory is that if you ask them about it, they have to dig through the pile to find it, then yours is on top (and next in line . . .). Pure speculation though. |

Well the class has been completed and my application will be sent today, so we shall see how long this whole process takes. Side note - an older dude was thrown out of my class due to his inability to handle a firearm. He was on the line next to me and was told over and over to keep his hand off the trigger until instructed to do so. It became so bad that I thought he was going to shot me and the instructor due to his inability to control his weapon. Let's just say I have a new appreciation for what the instructor has to go through each and every class. |
We had an old dude (on oxygen) in our class. He kept interrupting the class and rattling on about nothing. I believe he had some sort of mental problems going on. Wife and I figured he cost us at least two extra hours of class time. ![]() Anyway, he told us went to the same church as our instructor. We were advised the old dude would do his qualifying at a "later date". I for one was damn glad he was not around the line with us. |

Yea, I missed a signature on the picture holder and there was a delay for some paperwork. They did send me info to check the status online though. Ben

Do you have still have the link that they gave you? I am sure that I'm not the only one who would like it. Thanks in advance for sharing it. |

Well my letter from the State came today giving me my "status check number". So I logged in and all that it says is that the application is being processed. Not much else. Does anybody know how long it takes from when you get the letter to actually getting your CHL? |

Here's a good resource for Texas CHL info, which includes wait times reported by applicants: Texas CHL Forum |
That is a great resource, thank you for posting the link! |
+1. Maybe BBoyce's app sent up a red flag and set the wheels of gov't in motion. Look outside your apartment, dude. Are there guys with crewcuts and body armor hanging out like they're waiting for something? Unlock your door, because they may not knock first. |

Well I have two guns that I will more than likely carry. One is a Glock 27 with and IWB holster. I like this gun due to the size, weight and stopping power (.40 S&W). My other gun is a Kimber Ultra CDP II and I need to get a holster for it. I love the gun, but it is quite a bit heavier than the Glock. |
|
I've been thinking the same thing about what my first carry experience will be like. Guess I'll be finding out tomorrow. |
|
Well today was my first day of carrying my gun legally thanks to my newly minted CHL. Kind of an interesting experience I might add. When you carry a loaded gun on your person, it gives you a whole new perspective on responsibility. With that said I also like the added security knowing what is riding on my hip. I just wish I would have done this years ago! |
And now if you ever find yourself going someplace without it you'll feel 'naked' and exposed. |

My guess is that I get it sometime in December...
