Where can a guy go to shoot FA in the Austin area?  Reds has Thursday as Full Auto night but the gun has to be suppressed.  Beyond that every place I have called has said no.  I live up in Leander north of Austin, so anything out that way would be preferable.  I have land outside of La Grange, but I was looking for something a bit closer.  Any ideas?

I understand that Stan's Outdoor Shooting Range is full-auto friendly.
It's just up 183 from Leander, roughly 10 miles north of Hwy 29 (Seward Junction).

Crap.

Call The Gun Store in Cedar Park and ask there. They are a class-III dealer and will have some information about where to shoot.

David, the owner of The Gun Store LLC, is a good friend of mine. If you would, tell him you were sent by ARFCOM.

Adidas02,

The only ranges left in the Austin area that allows full-auto now that Texas Tactical was shut down are  Hill Country Rifle Range run by the infamous "Crazy Richard" and Reds South.

There have been recent reports that HCR had closed, was going to close, and also that he no longer allowed full auto.

I can tell you that I was there last weekend and had a Saiga-12 SBS, M16, and MP5 with me and he had no problems with any of them, but was asked that I keep the M16 limited to burst fire so that rounds didnt escape the berms.

On the pistol metal target range, I could dump full mags from my MP5 without issue.

The price of admission was steep at $25 bucks for what amounted to an hour of range time.  However, it is an all day pass, so if I had shown up earlier I could have stayed longer before it got dark.

Howerer, "Richard" is finicky and he probably makes rules up as he goes along and if he doesn't like you (i.e minority, thinks you are .gov, aliens, or a commie) he may just tell you no to full-auto fire.

I have been going to HCR for about 5 years on and off so I am a familiar face which may help.

All I can suggest is that you head out to HRC and see what happens.  Other than that, you are stuck with Reds South on Thursdays.

There used to be alot of places that allowed full-auto fire in Austin.  A quick breakdown is below.

1. Red South - Hwy 290 - (Always Limited to Thursday Nights & Suppressed)
2. Tony's - N. 183 - (was unrestricted) *Now Stans Range and no more full-auto.
3. Minute Man Range - Near the Bell County line- (unrestricted) *Now Closed
4. Cooks Indoor Range - Pflugerville- (wasunrestricted for the most part) *Now Reds's North and no more full auto.
5. Austin Skeet Range - Manor - (Restricted to burst) *No more full-auto
6. Hill Country Rifle Range - Hamilton Pool - (Unrestricted)
7. Texas Tactical - Hays County - (Unrestricted) *Now Closed.

Of these 7 places only two remain open to full auto in any capacity.

Reds South and HCR.

The next closest places I know of that allow full-auto in any capacity.

1. Impact Zone -Brookshire (west of Houston)-
2. Bullet Hole - San Antonio-
3. Tiger Valley - Waco -

Thanks for the info guys.  I din't get around to checking with The Gun Store, but hopefully I will today.  HCR ends up being about 20 minutes colser than our property outside of La Grange, so typically I'll just head out to our place...although curiousity has been peaked for quite a while after all the interesting stories I have heard about the owner.  I may just head out there to check it out.

It's sad to see so many places closed down, or restricted.  :(

what's the place on Littig Road?

outside of Manor, as the crow flies....prolly 1 mile from the Austin Skeet/Rifle Range, due South.

Capital Gun Club or something??

dunno what the deal is on it, but there's a range there, as my dad lives out that way now.

That's the Austin Rifle Club - a private club with a very nice facility. $75/year.

and their bylaws specifically exclude any full auto....

On a personal note I have shot there once with a co-worker who was a member.  The glares I got from the other members when I pulled out an AR with a CMAG made me never want to be a member there.

If you are looking for a benchrest club they do have a nice physical facility.
