I have checked on the forum and couldn't find any guidance for my particular state;  I am from TX and I am 22.  I would really like to get my ffl have; I am just getting sick of having to get other people to ship handguns for me for repair and gunsmithinghere

Are you wanting to send guns out for repair, or receive guns to be repaired?

send guns out, purchase directly; have them mailed to me so I don't have to go to an actual shop etc.; I will NOT be repairing anyone else's weapon.

If you are selling a gun, you can ship it directly (no handguns via USPS) to the buyer's FFL.  No need to involve an FFL on your end.

If you are sending a gun in for repair, you can ship it directly (no handguns via USPS) to the manufacturer or gunsmith.  The manufacturer / gunsmith can send it back to you directly.  No need to involve an FFL on your end.

You can get a C&R FFL which allows you to buy and sell C&R firearms directly (no handguns via USPS).  I hear it's difficult to get a regular FFL unless you have a real business.

I have checked on the forum and couldn't find any guidance for my particular state;  I am from TX and I am 22.  I would really like to get my ffl and I have no criminal record or anything, I am super clean; I am just getting sick of having to get other people to ship handguns for me for repair and gunsmithing.  I was wondering where to get everything and any troubleshooting tips.  Do I actually have to register my home as a business?  Stuff like that.  Please any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

A: You have to do it as a business. If you don't look as if you're conducting a business, the ATF will pull your license.

B: You must have a premise. If it's your home/apt, it must be legal to run a gun business out of that location. (Ask yourself if you really want people coming in to your home to pick up transferred firearms. Remember, he may have his felonious buddies with him even though he passes the background check). You will get a visit from ATF prior to the granting of the license and they'll look around. Oh, and is someone going to be there to sign for the firearms that get shipped there? Often overlooked item.

C: If you tell them you're doing it just to keep the hassle down, and get yourself stuff easier, they won't grant you a license.

D: You can do Gunshows, but that cannot be your only place to buy and sell.

E: Once you become an FFL, EVERY FIREARM YOU SELL WILL REQUIRE A 4473 and an entry in your bound book.

F: The discount is not what you think. You're not going to get a Kimber Combat Stainless for $500 or a Barret 82a1 for 1000.00, you'll get a 20 - 30% discount and that's it. Unless you purchase 15 - 20 firearms at a time.

Good Luck

You are making 20-30% on each firearm? I make 10% and many customers think I'm ripping them off.

C&R stands for Curios and Relics.  A C&R FFL allows you to directly buy and sell firearms 50+ years old, and certain firearms newer than that.

There is more paperwork to being a FFL than you can imagine. Be prepared. We are a FFL in Princeton, a by appointment gunsmith. It's complicated, the paper has to be exact.
