Hi Everyone,

me and a bunch of guys are attending a 3 gun match in october, I was just wondering if anyone here had been to some and had any advice or recommendations for load-out and gear.

One of my friends has shot the match before but I figured any extra information I can get before then is good.

All I know about the match right now is that a handgun, rifle and shotgun will be needed, slings are recommended for the long guns (but not required) and that you are required to end each course of fire with all the equipment you started with (I'm not sure if this includes empty magazines or not).

Once again, all information is appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

ETA:  The match is in Mingus TX at Tac Pro Shooting Center

Hi CA_TX-Cop and others interested,

I help the TacPro folks RO their matches twice a year (last one was in May), it is a fun match.  It draws a very different crowd from my usual matches (USPSA pistol and 3-gun), so absolutely do not worry if you've not shot one before.  I'll likely be there again as long as I don't have a conflict.  TacPro is a great facility, uncluding 1000 yard range.

You need your 3 guns, you got that part.  Main advice is don't buy anything major until you try it out!!  SHooters are a very giving bunch and you can usually borrow or share what you need.

Main advice for shooting it is to relax and slow down.  Your only goal on this first one is to get through safely.  Once you get some match experience (different from any 2-way range or street experience) then you can go for competition.  There are a number of competition rules that don't square with the real world, but that are needed for safety of this large group of people, so don't be caught out and have to go home early.

Slings are nice but you can make it without one.  Sometimes there is a stage where you shoot with rifle or shotgun for a while, then go to pistol, so a sling that holds your longarm in a safe direction is nice to have.  Retaining magazines is not required (although owner and instructor Bill Davidson likes it alot when you do), the finishing with all your equipment just means that usually we don't ditch a weapon in the middle of a stage if it is empty or broken.  Sometimes we have had a safe place provided to down your longarm before proceeding with pistol.

Rifle, bring something that works and be able to carry 2-3 mags with you.  No more is needed, pockets are fine really.  #1 thing it to have your rifle zeroed and know where it hits out to 300 yards or so.  Targets are usually steel flashers or gongs.  Smallest lately has been 12" at 300 yards, not too hard if you are zeroed.  ARs predominate, there's a good number of 7.62s, and the occasional Garand, Enfield, or M40 for the masochists.  Usually there is one longer-range stage and one shorter one (<100 yards).  Perhaps max 30 rounds each stage if you don't miss.

Shotgun, bring something that works with the ammo you plan to shoot.  Birdshot is usually fine, targets are clay birds on stands or steel plates.  I carry some #4 or 00 buck for longer shots on poppers.  Bring some slugs just in case, we have shot those at poppers out to about 80 yards before, and paper targets closer in.  The biggest shotgun stage we've had was about 32 rounds, so it would be nice to have a pouch to hold about that many.  SAW pouch, claymore bag, any medium-size squarish pouch will work.

Pistol, bring enough mags and pouches for 30 or so rounds per stage, more is better.  #1 thing is to have a good holster that you do not need to f$&*$% with to get your pistol in and out.  I am usually the pistol RO, I see way too many people having to use their off hand to hold the holster open to get the pistol back in.  Or have 4 retention straps that get all jammed in there with the trigger when you reholster.

Post, email, or IM, I can talk more and answer any specific questions.  Hope you can make it out, it will be a good time.

Less tagging, more calling TacPro
It does fill up fast, don't wait if you are interested in playing.  The TacPro site has some picture galleries of the recent match if you want to see the range and some of the stages.

yeah, got all the entries by calling in the other day.  Have 6 people slated to come out in our group and we're supposed to all be on the same fire-team.

I'm still trying to decide whether to shoot my M1A Scout rifle, or my 16" AR with Socom ACE stock.  The shotgun will probably be my mossberg 500 with the 26" barrel and my handgun will be a glock 17 in my safariland 6004 thigh holster.
