The wife has decided that she wants to learn how to shoot a pistol. Yay! We've been going to gun shows and fondling different pistols to find something that fits her hands. We've narrowed down the contenders sufficiently so that later this month at the HGCA show I'll probably pick one up.

So what's the problem? I need to find a good basic pistol course for her to take. I can teach meathead 18 y.o. males to use a pistol and not kill themselves or me with no issues. I learned all that and more as SGT tr0g a long time ago. However, that style of instruction is not particularly suitable for someone who might get offended. More importantly, someone who might get offended and can make my life miserable. h
So what I need from y'all are some recommendations as to a good place or instructor to take something like NRA basic pistol in the greater Houston area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

haha I've had a similar problem...  Must tread very lightly around the females when giving instruction.  They don't take an ass chewing very well.  Similarly, you must be very careful choosing your words when providing "motivational assistance".

Sad as it sounds, pretend like you're working with a 6 year old.  Be very calm, very patient, and try not to bark.  Use small words and dish out lots of praise when they do something right. (<  Tx's patented method for trying to teach mrs. Tx anything >)

do not, REPEAT:  DO NOT, use phrases like "WTF ARE YOU DOING?  DIDN'T I JUST TELL YOU YOU NEED TO DO <whatever>?  ARE YOU FREAKING DEAF?  JESUS, IT'D BE EASIER TO TEACH A ONE-ARMED, SIX-FINGERED CIRCUS FREAK HOW TO DO THIS! < stomp off in disgust>"  (learn from my mistakes)

tr0g,

I had the same dilemma with my wife a year or so ago.  She wanted a pistol and wanted to learn to shoot, but I knew she wouldn't take instruction well from me.

I took her to Glock Day at our local range (in Longview), where she got to sample several pistols.  She settled on the G19 and took one home that day.  She also got to meet the range safety officer and his wife.  He is a Gunsite certified instructor and teaches a one-day condensed basic defensive handgun class.

She took this class and loved it.  They are teaching another one on Sat. May 27 if you are interested.  I know Longview isn't exactly in the "Greater Houston area" but it may be worth it to her to make the trip.  It's a very solid class for beginners and experienced shooters alike.

Let me know if you'd like more info.

I figured out my usual questions like "IS YOUR HEAD COMPLETELY INSERTED INTO YOUR 4TH POINT OF CONTACT" were not working real well. Unfortunately for me, tact and diplomacy aren't reliable members of the skill set.

SmallChange,

Thanks for the info, but the 27th is out. That's the date for the annual trip to Waxahachie.

You're a very wise man! It's like teaching your wife or girlfriend to fly....JUST SAY NO! Let someone else teach her.

Plus you may run the risk of taking the fun out of it for her if you do it.

Just my 2 cents

Also don't do like I did and go buy her a H&K .40 and say "hey I got you this pistol and you're going to like it" She couldn't even pull the trigger...totally ruined it for her. Let her pick the weapon out, no matter how gay it is, SHE's got to like it.

100% agreed that it is a bad idea to try and teach one's wife proper firearms handling.

Hot Wells offers pistol instruction, but not sure if they do it for non-CHL holders.  You may want to give them a call 281.373.0232.

I believe Sam Pruett also does instruction 832.237.4867.

You should be able to find something locally, but if you don't let me know.  They usually do the class in Longview once every 2 or 3 months.  It's ~ $100 for the day, which isn't bad for a full day of hands-on range training.

Best of luck.  I hope Mrs. tr0g enjoys the shooting sports!

CD Shoot  Call Cheryl and talk to her about a pistol class for your wife.  She's a great teacher.

It's not in Houston but KR Training does a good job with folks in you situation.  They're a little east of Austin.  My wife has been through their basic pistol class and did well.

I need to hook the mrs. up with my mom.  She (60 years old at the time) shot top score in her CHL class, if I recall correctly.

tr0g,  any way you could take her out in the country and to a farm or ranch?  I used to have a 160 acre farm in Oklahoma before I moved to Houston.

Took the wife(girlfriend then) to the back of the farm with  .22 ruger pistol.  No need to wory about range rules or pointing the gun into another lane or at  another shooter.
BASIC instruction first, ( this included safety) then as we progressed, hitting the target, then accuracy.  When we moved to Houston took her to Carter's Country (with no gun) to show her around ,  range rules, and to let her know others are there with LOUD guns.

Next trip, pistol with us.  Her 38 Super and she did great.  After a few times and her hitting the targets she thinks she doesn't need to go because she "can shoot".

Hope this helped, goodluck.

Definitely get an instructor, LOL  I attempted to teach a "female friend" how to shoot once upon a time.  She didn't take to it very well and I ended up bleeding

Chery at Hot Wells seems like the consensus choice. Thanks, guys. I'll start looking into it.

That is an excellent idea.  I tried to teach my wife it did not go too well.  I regret it.  It is better for you teach someone you don't know and she learns from someone she does not know.

There are ladies handgun classes around the Houston area on a semi-regular basis.

This one is in Texas City:

There are also programs at Thunder Gun Range and PSC:
