I can't shoot anything cute. I just can't. But turkeys are ugly and they are good to eat, and I want to go turkey hunting. I don't have a damn clue about any of this. CnL just laughs. Any turkey hunters that can help get me pointed in the right direction? Thanks. |
Use a 7mm when turkey hunting. Shoot right by their head and the velocity of the bullet will make their head spin and break their neck. |

First of all, fall Turkey is more of a "shoot 'em with a rifle" kind of proposition. The gobblers aren't looking to breed with hens, so you can kind of forget about calling them in. From what I've seen, they'll come to corn by the deer feeders. Choose a small-caliber rifle and shoot them in the base of the neck or the body - they're not too big, so the bullet won't have time to do a terrible amount of damage. I shot a turkey at 75 yards last fall with my 20" AR (scoped) in the base of the neck with Winchester 45gr JHPs. Spring turkey is an altogether different animal. Events have conspired to keep me from ever being out for spring turkey, so I can't tell you from first-hand experience, but I CAN recommend a good book to start with if you're interested. |
