Have any of you had any experience with Mike at SOG Armrory at local shows?  I am a pretty easy going guy, but this guy has freakin' pissed me off with his POOR customer service.  I am new here and fairly new to the AR, but this guy is out to take advantage of people...BEWARE!  Just wondering if I was the only one who had an issue.  I guess the lesson I learned was research your large purchases!

don't know about Mike.

Mark is the owner, or one of them, I am not sure about their buisiness structure.

Mark can be short with people, but I have never seen him be outright rude or do something as stupid as Bill Caplan at M&A Parts.

Mark's prices are a little high, but he is at every show and he has the stuff you need.  I don;t think his prices are so high that they are a rip-off.  I generally try to buy something form him every show.

In short, I stop and say hello everytime I see him and he always has interesting stuff for sale.

So, what exactly happened to yo that you have such strong feelings?

I have not had an issue with him. His prices are slightly higher than the norm, but like SC-Texas said if you need it he probably has it at the show.

What is your specific grievance?

As an un-educated buyer, I was not versed in the various laws regarding the legal length requirements of rifles.  Again, I take responsibility for doing my research after the purchase, but I felt that Mark should have asked me how I would use his 11.5" upper.  I own my own business and try to offer my customer's the best customer service possible as well as educate to ensure complete customer understanding.  All he had to say was - you know that you will not be able to legally own this weapon without....!  I would have then said, ok get me the 16" one!  I have now read everything that I was able to get my hands on and understand my options.  When I contacted Mark, he was not only short but very rude to put it nicely.   I talked to him today at Reliant and he just pissed me off more!  I have never been this mad about a purchase and have learned a valuable lesson.  I will say that I spoke with Keith @ NFA and he was truly a big help and other dealers could learn from his customer service and willingness to help a newbie!!!

So, he sold you the upper without asking you if you had an SBR or a machinegun?

What did you say to him at the show today?  What was his response?

Any chance that he thought you knoew what you were doing?

1.  Did you shoot it?
2.  What did you propose to mark to resolve the matter?

I'm not going to defend Mark, but I am very curious to see what happened.

Mark:  like I said, he can be cantankerous at times.

BTW:  Keith is good people.  A close friend.

He knew I was unfamiliar with the AR and that we discussed the lenghts pros & cons, but legality never came up!  I purchase last Sat. in Pasadena and shot about 5 rounds through it on Sunday.  Little did I know I was carrying around a Federal Offense!  A LEO buddy of mine came over to check it out and, man you should have seen his face!  After I talked to Keith, we decided to get a 5.5" FH and I would have him silver solder it on to be legal.  I went to the show today to find a new FH and the only one in the whole show was at SOG.  I approached Mark and reminded him who I was.  I told him what I decided to do and needed the FH to be legal.  He said OK, that would be $44.95 plus tax... I was shocked!  I asked him what was the difference was between his and the Bushmaster that was listed on their website for $14.95?  His response: NOTHING!  Again, the money was not the issue, but the way he talks to people!  Needless to say, I ordered one from Bushmaster tonight!

Two yeras ago, I saw he put a upper with a 11.5 barrel on a post-ban RRA lower, and sold to a mexican guy for $2500 at reliant gun show. Yes, I was there, and I told him and the buyer, that's illegal. His reponsed:' it's OK, ATF never prosecuted anyone before."
What a fxxxing axxhole! He rapped off and screwed the guy!

Yes, I posted that story on this board after I came back from the gun show.

in a way the end buyer is also at fault by no means am i defending anyone but its always best to know what youre buying

i have delt with him and i agree, not the best business orientated person to deal with and prices are up there.

He seems a little short and abrupt at times. Ever since the other guy died, that table is not the most friendly. But it is not always unfriendly either, and it is never cheap. But he does have stuff nobody else carries.

I think you need to do a little more research before you buy. The 11.5 upper, the $45 flash hider, you need to slow down and ask around first.

I take pride in making sure he sees me walk past his table. The guy is a total prick, and his know- nothing helpers are worse. Fuck him, and I hope he has someone read this to him.

What gets to me is that customer service does not cost anything!  High prices, fine...I'll pay a little more if I need it or want it right then.  Most dealers seem to be in the business because they really love guns and associated parts.  This guy only seems to love himself!  Just want people to know that I have now found dealers who do care about their customer's experience a are more than happy to help you out!  Buy from them, I know I will going forward!

+1 for what folks have said about SOG's consitent presence, good selection, and relatively high [abeit not absurd] prices.  I took a newb friend to the last funshow, and he bought a couple items from them.  IMHO, Mark did OK with the customer service, but then again, I knew exactly what we were looking for/at; not sure if it would have been the same for my buddy had I not been there.  At any show, buyer beware if you have not dealt with the dealer before.

I have to say this:  I came in with a project in mind and a general sope of work for my AC556:  Mark told me to hang on for a minute, rummaged around his table, pulled up a VFG w/ graphite rails, etc anthat was JUST what I needed then knocked 5 bucks off tthe price.

So, that leaves us where?

Hodge, did you ask him about the purchase?  Did you ask him to give you a discount on the flash hider?  What kind of flash hider was it?
10/16/2005 6:36:09 PM EDT
[#13]
It was a 5.5" ext. Car 15 FH.  We went back and forth and he said that his prices are the best that he can do and that they reflect the lowest price so that he can still be profitable!  I let it go and told him that I would order from Bushmaster.

When I asked him about the sale, he said that my buddy should check his facts...that all I had to do to keep it was fill out a few forms with the ATF or weld on a longer FH.

Being a new guy to the black rifle I do find many who look at you with the attitude of...you mean you dont know that or how that works ??

Its very frustrating and rude but I have read a lot here and deal with the folks who are happy to answer my questions and these guys have turned out to have the best prices.

I deal with Mark from Delta Force. He has had all the parts and accessories I have needed.

SOG prices are very high, I bought a verticle grip and rail mount from him at Tulsa and he charged tax and provided no receipt 54 bucks..Delta Force had the same grip for 30 !!

I look at SOGs stuff but when I check the prices they are way to high..but hey its all about making money not giving good deals..

Just my 2 cents

He is absolutely correct, technically.  You can fill out some forms, send in $200.00, spend another $200.00 on a corp so you won;t need an LEO signoff and register it as an SBR (Short Barrelled rifle).

That's not the point though.

The good news is that the situation has forced me to learn a lot very quickly.  I am a business owner and already incorporated, so that part was done!  I have completed the ATF forms and will mail tomorrow to register my weapon.  I look for the bright side...I have learned a lot and have met several nice people!

don't forget to have the K Man engrave your receiver with the corp name and the city and state.  it's a few bucks to set up the tooling so if you have a couple AR receivers you may want to get them all done at once.  not that you would want to SBR any extra guns but it does not really hurt the value and then it's one less thing you need to do in the future.

Yup, me too.  Often times - he has what I am looking for... always a good attitude, decent/fair pricing, and if you buy a lot, he will start knocking the price down without being asked.  Sure, I can order online a bit cheaper, but I get to handle it at his table, make sure I like it, and he is a hell of a nice guy.  Never got any attitude, and that goes a long way.

Update:  Just got my upper back from Keith from NFA and it is great!  Super nice guy and had it done the same day!  He even met me half way so that I would not have to drive as far!  He is a great guy, with great service and delivered a great product!  I would reccomend him for your custom needs.

hey keith are you able to perm attatch flash hiders ?

have a bbl i would like to cut down since the threads are ruined on it unless you can repair them? the threads have been flattened by a permanent attatching pin from a comp. (its a post ban bbl) i bought it really cheap and figured i could shorten it unless you think you can repair the threads.

only the first half is damaged but they are pretty much flat.
