If I remember right nearly 6 weeks.

The DPS is generally required to issue or deny within 60 days.  Generally.

Mine took almost 8 weeks. But that was shortly after the CHL became legal and the demand was high.

A Class for a carry permit?
Its nice having a SHALL ISSUE State.
Damn!! I figured it was a God given RIGHT TO CARRY in Texas!! Hard to believe the law would be so much more lax in the left wing liberal fruitcake land I have to live in.

It _is_ a shall issue state here but they also require that people prove they can hit the side of a barn from 3 feet, and retain simple information about gun safety.

Mine took 89 days.  They have to give it to either issue your permit, reject your application, or let you know there's a delay for the background check within 90 days.

i have no idea.   i did report a fight me and some buds had in a resturant. which i didnt know what class it was.

the lady in austin kept asking if it was domestic violence which it wasnt and said that since it wasnt i should be fine but it still took that long.

one day i called which was close to the year and a half mark she told me i was aprroved and she had my license sitting in front of her but since it took so long she requested for a new i.d. for me since i have lost over a year of use. after she got it back with the new expiration date she had to send it to records so that they can input my info.

my friend that took the class with me and also one of the guys involved in the little fighting was also delayed. his actually took an extra week cause the lady forgot his on her desk and never turned it in to records till he had to call.

it sucks having to wait that long, i damn near gave up on it and took it as a lost. but now that i have it i know my background is clear so next on the list is an sbr and maybe a suppressor

there was a third person that took the class with us which was the friends wife and she got hers like a month after sending it in.

It is actually 60 days.

Texas Government Code

§ 411.177.  ISSUANCE OR DENIAL OF LICENSE.  (a)  The
department shall issue a license to carry a concealed handgun to an
applicant if the applicant meets all the eligibility requirements
and submits all the application materials.  The department may
issue a license to carry handguns only of the categories indicated

411.189.  The department shall administer the licensing procedures
in good faith so that any applicant who meets all the eligibility
requirements and submits all the application materials shall
receive a license.  The department may not deny an application on
the basis of a capricious or arbitrary decision by the department.
(b)  The department shall, not later than the 60th day after
the date of the receipt by the director's designee of the completed
application materials:
(1)  issue the license;
(2)  notify the applicant in writing that the
application was denied:
(A)  on the grounds that the applicant failed to
qualify under the criteria listed in Section 411.172;
(B)  based on the affidavit of the director's
designee submitted to the department under Section 411.176(b);  or
(C)  based on the affidavit of the qualified
handgun instructor submitted to the department under Section
411.189(c);  or
(3)  notify the applicant in writing that the
department is unable to make a determination regarding the issuance
or denial of a license to the applicant within the 60-day period
prescribed by this subsection and include in that notification an
explanation of the reason for the inability and an estimation of the
amount of time the department will need to make the determination.

It took 90 days, I had an old class a miss on my record that hung it up for review. I had to call and ask WTF, The nice guy doing the reviews searched the stack on his desk, and voila! Cowboys and indians all over again....

Call em if it has been longer than 60 days... Be NICE, and they are working on a TON of them after the Tyler shooting....

It was in the summer of 2002, apparently there was a huge number of people getting their CHL at the time.   I did receive a letter from Caroline Roepke(sp) 2 weeks after I submitted my packet, the letter stated that they were 2-3 weeks behind in processing and that some counties were very slow in sending back the info the state requested.

I did get one of the coveted "5 year" licenses though.  My birthday had passed while they were processing the license, so they added on an extra 9 months.

My initial one took 60 days.  Gloftoe's renewal only took a couple of weeks.

Texas is also shall-issue, but you have to take a "class" and demonstrate proficiency in order to get the license.  If you pass the course and don't have any no-nos on your record, they can't turn you down.

Sort of... we had a guy in our class that had never fired a handgun in his life, shows up to take the class. First try at qual, he slices his hand open with the slide of his 1911 clone, bleeds all over the place, and manages to not hit the target, but hits the target hangers and cuts the cable.

They worked with him through the lunch break, and somehow he got a minimum score. still not safe IMO.

I think the standard should be a little higher - I really don't feel safe with guys like this guy I described out there in public with a loaded weapon. If he shows up for his CHL class without even putting a box of ammo downrange in practice, having never fired a weapon before, chances are he is not going to seek additional instruction. Minimum standards should be raised IMO, considering that as it is you have to be almost legally blind to fail to qualify, and no prior training or experience whatsoever is required.

Just my view.

We had a lady put the bullets in BACKWARDS in her pistol magazine and the instructor, Gregg Garrett, told her to go home, familiarize herself with her weapon, and come back the next weekend.  She was not happy, but she had no business being on the firing line.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...
