| I am interested in havind an ar15 barrel shortened to 11.5". Could anyone recommend someone in the Dallas or Kaufman County areas who could handle the transfer? Thank's, Ray Rinehart |
| No need for a transfer, assuming you already have an AR lower. Just fill out ATF Form1 and send it in with the necessary supporting documents (fingerprint card, etc.) and a check for $200. This allows you to "make" the SBR by putting a short upper on it. You'll have to engrave the "manufacturer's name" (i.e. your name or your corporate name), city, and state on the side of the receiver. |

I think you would be best served to F1 the lower, then buy a 11.5 upper, and sell the current upper you have. The time and expense to cut it down, then you still need to replace many of the parts, re-drill the gas hole, etc., is not worth it. |
| rbailey, I have a somewhat unusual residential status right now. I've met Sheriff Byrnes @ a couple of VFD events and did some research on his background. He is a retired Texas Ranger Captain and is in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Very impressive. When I have an ar15 set up the way I want it I plan on doing some training @ the facility outside Ennis. I do have family in the area. Ray Rinehart |
I did not know that about Sheriff Burnes. Good to know. What ever alterations you need for your AR I would recommenf Keith Norman from NFA Investmens (above). I have seen his work and it is great. My buddy got a 9mm suppressed upper from him, awesome! I am now waiting on my paper work to come back so I can get my .233 can from him. I have had several e-mail chats with him and he is a great guy to deal with. I believe he is just north of the Houston area, so not too far from home (DFW). |

I agree with the advice about purchasing a 11.5" barrel. For the amount of time and expense involved to ship a barrel, shorten it, rethread it, tweak the gas port so that it functions, and return ship the barrel, you could have purchased a brand new barrel and kept your old barrel as a spare. I would definitely recommend a chrome lined barrel / chamber for function reasons in the shorty uppers. When you are putting it all togather, an adjustable gas block is not a bad idea to install. BTW, you will want to make sure that your chamber stays VERY clean on the shorty upper. You probably should install a 0.25" rubber O-ring around your extracter spring as well. Shorty uppers have a much shorter, but more intense, gas system. The bolt is much more violent when it extracts the spent cartridges from the chamber. I have played around with the pigtail tubes on shorty uppers, but I prefer the strandard M16 gas tube. Keith NFA Investments, A BATFE Licensed Firearms Manufacturer Keith Norman, owner Tel. Hell! I live in Van Zandt county, and I work at TVCC in Terrel. I can't believe I have never met either of you two! TRG |
Koening's Guns in Terrell does good work. They are not very NFA-savvy. You will need some paperwork with you (at least I did) when getting NFA work done. TRG |
]www.tvcc.edu/faculty/ballen As for a 10.5"... I know you asked Keith, but, my 10.5" is a real fun gun to shoot. The fireball is so large, that even in daytime it flashes over your sight picture and is clearly visible. Fun, though... real fun! TRG |

Same here. I started with a 16" which had been repeatedly shortened to 10.25". The blast is awesome. Especially in full auto! About the LMT upper, I really can't say. Everything I have seen from LMT has been excellent, so I can't imagiane that you could go wrong there. |
